The festival that closes the summer in the 'hanging village'

At the end of September, as the vineyards of the Tuscia region prepare for the harvest, Vitorchiano bids farewell to summer with the San Michele Grape Harvest Festival, an event that blends devotion to the patron saint, Saint Michael the Archangel, with the rural traditions of the harvest. Promoted by the San Michele Arcangelo Festival Committee, the event takes place between the former Convent of the Sant'Agnese Complex and the squares of the historic center, creating an authentic and convivial atmosphere that officially closes the Vitorchiano summer calendar.

Vitorchiano celebrates its patron saint twice a year: in May with a grand spring festival and at the end of September, coinciding with the liturgical feast of September 29th, with this celebration dedicated to the grape harvest. The religious service in the Church of San Michele is the spiritual heart of the day, renewing a centuries-old bond between the community and its protector, in a land where the agricultural cycle has always dictated local festivities and collective rituals.

The most anticipated moment is the traditional grape harvest demonstration: young harvesters, barefoot inside wooden tubs, crush the grapes to extract the juice that will become must, just as it was done in the past in cellars carved into the local peperino stone. It is a scene that delights children and moves the elderly, passing on the gestures of the ancient rural civilization of Tuscia to new generations.

Autumn flavors: the San Michele ring cake

The festival is also a delicious opportunity to discover the San Michele ring cake, a typical Vitorchiano pastry recognized as a Traditional Agri-food Product of the Lazio region, accompanied by the essential wine biscuits and other traditional autumn treats. The community lunch at the former Convent of Sant'Agnese brings families and visitors together around local dishes, often featuring specialties like handmade fettuccine with porcini mushrooms.

Band, majorettes, and community spirit

The historic Fedeli di Vitorchiano marching band and the majorette performances provide the rhythm for the festival as they parade through the village streets. Past editions have also featured food trails with local wine tastings, street performers, and family entertainment in the town squares, confirming a successful formula that mixes faith, flavor, and popular entertainment.
