The wine weekend at the Villamagna estate
Every year, on the last weekend of May, the Torre Zambra estate in Villamagna takes part in Cantine Aperte, the most anticipated event in Italian wine tourism promoted by the Movimento Turismo del Vino. Launched in the 1990s, it is now Europe's largest wine tourism event, with hundreds of wineries opening their gates to enthusiasts and curious visitors over a single weekend. In Abruzzo, the initiative is coordinated by the Movimento Turismo del Vino Abruzzo and brings together dozens of wineries across the four provinces.
Located on the hills of the Chieti province, in the heart of Abruzzo, Villamagna boasts a centuries-old winemaking tradition. Its microclimate, shaped by the proximity of the Adriatic Sea and the mountains, creates significant temperature variations that produce fragrant whites and complex reds. This is home to the small Villamagna DOC denomination, dedicated to the Montepulciano grown in the municipal territory, and Torre Zambra is the benchmark winery bringing this wine to Cantine Aperte.
The De Cerchio family has been cultivating these lands for over a century. The winery, which has grown from generation to generation, now produces the great Abruzzo denominations: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, and the prestigious Villamagna DOC. During Cantine Aperte, visitors can discover these native grape varieties with guidance from the producers themselves.
Torre Zambra's approach goes beyond the classic tasting. The weekend includes:
Following national regulations, a symbolic contribution grants you the official glass, the pouch, and tastings at participating wineries. Booking is recommended, especially for tables at the restaurant and winebar and for the poolside evenings. Cantine Aperte is the perfect opportunity to combine a trip into the Chieti hinterland with the discovery of the flavors and landscapes of Abruzzo.
In 2026, Cantine Aperte returned to the Torre Zambra estate in Villamagna on the weekend of May 30 and 31. The national theme of the edition, dedicated to innovations in wine tourism, provided the backdrop for two days of wine tastings, vineyard walks, and tours of the winemaking areas. The Saturday (from 8:00 PM to 2:00 AM) and Sunday (from 8:00 PM to midnight) evenings featured long poolside DJ sets, with dedicated street food and service at the resort's Contemporary Restaurant and Winebar.
