The patronal feast of Ripa Teatina, blending devotion, dialect poetry, and the porchetta festival
In the heart of the Chieti province, in Abruzzo, the town of Ripa Teatina dedicates the final days of September each year to its patronal feast in honor of Maria Santissima del Sudore and Saint Roch. It is the most cherished event of the year for the town: days when the village is dressed in festive attire, families reunite, and many Ripa natives living abroad return home to participate in the rites and celebrations.
The devotion dates back to March 22, 1728, during Holy Week, when, according to tradition, the image of the Madonna began to weep drops of blood that ran from her forehead down to the Child. The painting, attributed to Antonio Solario, known as "lo Zingaro," was originally kept in a small church dedicated to Santa Maria dell'Alento, near the Alento River; after a flood, the sacred image was moved to the town center and is now venerated in the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, in the historic center of Ripa Teatina. A roadside shrine near the river marks the original site of the miracle.
The most solemn moment of the festival is the procession that winds through the town streets, accompanied by a marching band and the faithful: an expression of devotion intertwined with the veneration of Saint Roch, a protector invoked against epidemics and a beloved figure in Abruzzese popular tradition. Religious celebrations take place in the parish church and culminate in an act of homage to the image of the Virgin.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival maintains a strong popular and convivial character. Traditional highlights include:
The Feast of the Madonna del Sudore and Saint Roch is one of the most characteristic events in the calendar of patronal festivals in the province of Chieti. Faith, folklore, gastronomy, and popular culture merge into a single celebration that renews, year after year, the identity of Ripa Teatina and the community's bond with its history and traditions.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of the Madonna del Sudore and Saint Roch will be held in Ripa Teatina, in the province of Chieti, in late September, renewing a tradition rooted in the devotion and history of the town. The procession through the historic center, religious rites in honor of the Virgin and Saint Roch, and the usual popular moments—from the Abruzzese dialect poetry contest to the porchetta festival and live shows in the square—are all expected.
