The queen of Umbrian festivals: the Cannara onion takes centre stage in all its preparations
The Cannara Onion Festival is considered one of the most important and popular festivals in Umbria. It takes place in the historic centre of Cannara, a small town in the province of Perugia famous for its onion, a typical product with recognised organoleptic qualities. For two weeks in September, the town comes alive, welcoming thousands of visitors drawn by good food and a festive atmosphere.
The heart of the event are the six food stands โ 'Al Cortile Antico', 'El Cipollaro', 'Il Giardino Fiorito', 'Il Rifugio del cacciatore', 'La locanda del curato', and 'La Taverna del Castello' โ open every evening from 7:30 PM and on Sundays also for lunch from 12:00 PM. Each stand offers its own menu with dishes elaborated with onion, from appetisers to desserts, in a competition of creativity that is itself part of the show.
Alongside the food, the festival offers a packed calendar of events: musical events, dance shows, sporting events, comedy shows, cultural appointments, and workshops for children. An event that enhances the identity of Cannara and its symbol product, blending rural tradition with a village festival.
The 2026 edition, the 44th, of the Cannara Onion Festival is expected in September in the historic centre of the town. The festival will feature the six food stands with their onion-based menus and the usual calendar of musical events, shows, sporting events, and workshops for children. Traditionally, the festival is spread over two weeks in September; the exact dates will be communicated by the Cannara Onion Festival Committee.
The detailed programme for the 2026 edition will be published on the official website festadellacipolla.com. Based on recent editions, the festival includes:
