The historic February 2nd fair in one of Salento's most beautiful villages
In the heart of lower Salento, in the province of Lecce, the village of Specchia celebrates the Candelora Fair every February 2nd: one of the oldest and most characteristic events in the Salento calendar. Awarded the title of "One of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages," Specchia provides the perfect backdrop for a festival that weaves together popular faith, rural heritage, and street commerce, attracting numerous visitors and vendors from across the Salento peninsula every year.
The Candelora Fair has been documented for over a century: the February 11, 1899 edition of the newspaper La Provincia di Lecce reported that "this year the Candelora fair was very well attended, despite the threatening weather." The name derives from the Latin candelorum, for candelaram, referring to the blessing of the candles associated by Christians with the feast held in memory of the Presentation of the Lord and the Purification of the Virgin Mary, forty days after Christmas. In Specchia, tradition dictates that the blessed candles be kept with devotion and lit to ward off thunderstorms or to invoke divine help in times of need.
The day is marked by rites in the Mother Church and the Church of the Madonna Assunta. In the morning, Holy Masses are celebrated, featuring the traditional blessing of the children born during the year; in the late afternoon, the blessing of the candles takes place at the Church of the Madonna Assunta, followed by a procession to the Mother Church for the solemn Holy Mass. Housed in the Mother Church is the "Cannalora," a precious early 20th-century papier-mâché composition depicting the Presentation at the Temple, with Saint Simeon, Saint Joseph, the Virgin Mary, and the Baby Jesus: a unique work of its kind among the parishes of the Diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca, which was carried in procession through the town streets until the 1960s.
Alongside the devotional aspect, the popular heart of the day is the large market fair that spreads across Piazza del Popolo and along Via Umberto I, Via Plebiscito, Via Amendolara, and Via Matteotti. The stalls offer clothing, footwear, food products, household utensils, and farming equipment, in a market that preserves the soul of the ancient rural fairs of Salento. Among the typical products, the pestanache—sweet yellow carrots grown according to local tradition—stand out.
The Candelora Fair is also the ideal opportunity to visit Specchia out of season, when the Salento village reveals its most authentic side: the historic center with its cobbled alleys, the Risolo Castle, the courtyards, and the underground oil mills tell centuries of rural history. Located a short distance from Santa Maria di Leuca and the Ionian coast, the town of Specchia represents one of the gateways to the most genuine Salento, where popular traditions continue to live on intact.
The 2026 Candelora Fair was held in Specchia on February 2, 2026, following the fixed date of the event. As per tradition, the day was divided between the devotional dimension in the Mother Church and the Church of the Madonna Assunta and the large market fair spread across Piazza del Popolo and along Via Umberto I, Via Plebiscito, Via Amendolara, and Via Matteotti.
The schedule included the celebration of Holy Masses, the blessing of the candles, and the procession to the Mother Church for the solemn Mass. The stalls offered clothing, footwear, food products, utensils, and agricultural tools, along with typical local products such as pestanache.
The program follows the traditional structure of the event:
