The Religion Today Film Festival is the longest-running international film event dedicated to the relationship between cinema and religion, fostering a culture of peace and dialogue among faiths, cultures, peoples, and individuals. Founded in Trento in 1997 as Italy's first spiritual and interreligious film festival, it is a traveling event that reaches various municipalities across the Trentino-Alto Adige region from its home city, including Lavarone on the Lavarone-Luserna Plateau (Alpe Cimbra) in the Province of Trento.
In Lavarone, screenings are held at the Cinema Teatro Dolomiti, in the heart of the town. The festival brings a selection of feature films, documentaries, and shorts from around the world to this setting among the woods and Great War forts of the plateau: works that explore spirituality, the search for meaning, the encounter between different cultures, and major contemporary issues. Evenings are often introduced by the festival's artistic director and accompanied by presentations of projects and international guests.
The traveling format is the heart of Religion Today's identity: bringing great dialogue-focused cinema not only to the theaters of Trento and Bolzano but also to the towns and outskirts of the region—from Arco to Dro, from Riva del Garda to the Piné Plateau, and up to Lavarone. In this way, the Alpe Cimbra, a tourist destination beloved for its nature and Cimbrian community, becomes part of an international cultural event for an evening. Screenings in Lavarone are free of charge, designed for the local public, vacationers, and auteur cinema enthusiasts alike.
With over seventy films selected each year from dozens of countries and an international interreligious jury that awards the "In the Spirit of Faith" prize, Religion Today is now known and appreciated worldwide. Its presence in Lavarone testifies to the bond between the festival and the territories of Trentino, in a region—the land of the Council of Trent—that has made dialogue between faiths and cultures a cornerstone of its identity.
The 29th edition of the Religion Today Film Festival is announced for September 2026, in Trento and various municipalities of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. For 2026, the festival plans to reach several locations on the plateau, including Lavarone, through its traveling route. The exact dates for the Lavarone stop and the film program have not yet been made public: they will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. As usual, screenings at the Cinema Teatro Dolomiti will be free of charge.
