The food and wine trekking experience in the hills of Monsummano Terme
Every spring, Cammin Gustando transforms the hills of Monsummano Terme, in the heart of the Valdinievole area near Pistoia, into a vast open-air culinary trail. Launched in 2019, this non-competitive food and wine trek combines a passion for hiking with the discovery of the Tuscan landscape and local delicacies. Year after year, the event has grown to attract over 1,200 walkers, becoming one of the most anticipated dates on the town's spring calendar.
The route follows a loop of approximately 12.7 kilometres with an elevation gain of just under 500 metres, offering a medium-easy difficulty level perfect for walking enthusiasts. Starting from the town centre in Piazza del Popolo, the trail climbs into the hills, passing through the striking local quarries (Cava Grande, Cava Grigia, Cava Rossa, and the Paretone), the lush greenery of the Grotta Giusti Park, and reaching the medieval village of Montevettolini, one of the most picturesque in central Tuscany. Between forests, streams, ancient olive groves, and traditional vineyards, the path offers panoramic views over the entire Valdinievole valley before returning to the town.
The heart of the day lies in the tasting stops scattered along the route: nine gourmet points where walkers, using the tasting card included in their ticket, can pause to savour local specialities. Extra virgin olive oil, wine, cured meats, cheeses, and traditional treats showcase the excellence of the Montalbano Oil and Wine Route. The path is also filled with entertainment, music, and festive moments that turn the walk into a true community celebration.
Cammin Gustando is organized by the Associazione Culturale Senza Tempo with the support of the Municipality of Monsummano Terme. Departures are staggered throughout the morning to ensure a smooth flow along the trails, while the finish line is set at the Parco Aldo Moro gardens, where walkers and families gather to conclude the day in good company. The ticket includes a marked map, a tasting card, a gadget kit with a water bottle and bag, entertainment, and basic medical insurance.
More than just a walk, Cammin Gustando is a way to experience the Monsummano Terme area and Tuscany in a slow, authentic way: you spend hours immersed in nature and history, stop to taste local specialities, and discover a corner of the Valdinievole often far from the main tourist routes. It is an experience that wins over trekking enthusiasts, families, and foodies every year, regularly selling out.
The sixth edition of Cammin Gustando confirmed the great success of the event: over 1,200 participants walked the approximately 12.7-kilometre loop in the hills of Monsummano Terme. The day opened in Piazza del Popolo with a musical warm-up, followed by staggered departures in three shifts (9:30, 10:00, and 10:30 AM).
Along the route, marked by CAI trails, walkers crossed natural quarries, the Grotta Giusti Park, and the medieval village of Montevettolini, stopping at the nine tasting stations dedicated to local products. The finish line was set at the Piazza Aldo Moro gardens. The tickets, divided into three categories (Blue, Green, and Orange) with prices up to 22 euros, were completely sold out.
