The wine exhibition at the foot of the Villa Medicea in Cerreto Guidi
The Medicea Wine Festival is the summer highlight celebrating the winemaking culture of Cerreto Guidi, a village in the Empolese Valdelsa area of the province of Florence, Tuscany. Organized by the local Pro Loco in collaboration with the Municipality of Cerreto Guidi, the event transforms the historic center into a vast tasting trail winding through the town's streets and squares, with the incomparable backdrop of the Villa Medicea—a UNESCO World Heritage site—setting the scene for the evenings.
The festival spans two weekends in July and revolves around two distinct yet complementary events. The first is Street Wine Cerreto, where wineries from the Montalbano and Empolese Valdelsa regions set up their stalls in the square facing the Villa: purchasing a wine glass grants you a set of tokens to spend along the tasting route, paired with gourmet street food and live music. The second stage is dedicated to the Mestolo d'Oro, a gastronomic competition where the four districts of the Palio del Cerro vie for the coveted award.
The technical heart of the festival is the Rubino Mediceo Wine Competition, a true prelude to the main event. Dozens of local wineries enter their labels, divided into categories (sparkling, white, rosé, Chianti DOCG, red, and dessert wines), which are evaluated by a technical commission of sommeliers and oenologists, alongside popular juries. The winners are announced during the Medicea Wine Festival, serving as the crowning moment of the tasting evenings.
Beyond the wine glasses, the event offers entertainment and initiatives every year that highlight the local area: exhibitions, family activities, and moments of conviviality that keep the village buzzing until late. Today, the Medicea Wine Festival stands as one of the most important showcases for the Montalbano wine region and a perfect opportunity to discover Cerreto Guidi, its Villa Medicea, and the warm hospitality of the local community.
The 2026 edition confirms the multi-event format from July 11 to 25, featuring the wine production of the Montalbano and Empolese Valdelsa regions. The main evenings are held in the historic center of Cerreto Guidi, at the foot of the Villa Medicea, with tastings, street food, and live music. As a technical prelude, the 19th edition of the Rubino Mediceo Competition saw 27 companies and over 80 labels compete this year, with winners announced during the festival.
In the square in front of the Villa Medicea, local wineries present their wines — reds, whites, rosés, and sparkling wines. Purchasing a glass grants you a booklet of tokens to use along the tasting route, accompanied by quality street food and live music.
A culinary challenge between the four districts of the Palio del Cerro, competing for the Mestolo d'Oro: dishes are judged by public vote and a guest chef, with wine tastings and music in the village.
27 companies from the Empolese Valdelsa and Montalbano areas compete with over 80 labels in six categories (sparkling, white, rosé, Chianti DOCG, red, and dessert wines). Winners are announced during the festival.
Cerreto Guidi is located in the province of Florence, in the Empolese Valdelsa area. By car, it can be reached via the SS67 or the FI-PI-LI highway (Empoli exit), continuing towards Vinci and Cerreto Guidi. The nearest train station is Empoli, which is well-connected to Florence and Pisa; from there, you can continue by bus or taxi.
The events take place in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and throughout the historic center, at the foot of the Villa Medicea.
Entry to the village is free. Participation in the Street Wine tastings requires the purchase of a wine glass and a token booklet (starting from approximately 15 euros).
