The neighborhood carnival of Camaro Superiore, featuring vibrant colors, Brazilian music, and papier-mâché art
The Camaro Spring Carnival, known to locals by its affectionate nickname "Camaro de Janeiro," is a popular festival that enlivens the streets of Camaro Superiore, an ancient and populous hillside district in the city of Messina, Sicily. More than just a parade, it is a moment of connection that involves the entire village community, filled with vibrant colors, masks, confetti, and a contagious Carioca atmosphere.
At the heart of the event is a handcrafted allegorical float, built by the expert hands of local volunteers and topped with two large, brightly colored papier-mâché parrots that evoke the Brazilian spirit and capture the enthusiastic gaze of the little ones. The masked parade winds its way through the district streets around the float, accompanied by music, dancing, and clouds of confetti.
The day is packed with entertainment: live music, DJ sets, group dances, and performances by local dance schools. Recent editions have featured host Helga Corrao, the sounds of the Iris Band, DJ sets by Dj Fox, and choreography by the Santino Marino dance school. There is no shortage of activities for children, with stilt walkers and costumed characters making the festival suitable for all ages.
The Camaro Spring Carnival was born as a local neighborhood festival, designed to bring residents, families, and visitors together for a day of outdoor socializing. The initiative is promoted by the "I Figli del Tuono" association, led by president Marina Giambò, with the support of local merchants and volunteers. In recent years, due to the bad weather that has often affected the traditional carnival period, the event has been rescheduled for the spring, maintaining its festive spirit and strengthening the district's sense of belonging.
Located on the hills overlooking the Strait, Camaro Superiore retains a strong village identity, tied to popular traditions and local devotion. This neighborhood carnival fits into this community fabric as an opportunity to showcase the area and its traditions, in a Messina that, alongside major city events, cherishes the small festivals of its historic districts.
The 2026 Camaro Spring Carnival "Camaro de Janeiro" was held on April 11, 2026, starting at 4:00 PM, along the streets of Camaro Superiore, in Messina. After the postponement caused by bad weather during the traditional carnival period, the "I Figli del Tuono" association, chaired by Marina Giambò, rescheduled the festival for spring in collaboration with MEPA Eventi Production.
The heart of the day was the handcrafted allegorical float with two large papier-mâché parrots, which thrilled the children. The program featured host Helga Corrao, music by the Iris Band, a DJ set by Dj Fox, performances by the Santino Marino dance school, and entertainment by a stilt walker for the little ones. The event turned into a great moment of community gathering for the entire district.
