A neighborhood festival in the heart of Dazio

The Our Lady of the Rosary Feast is one of the most cherished events in Rione Dazio, a historic district of Messina, Sicily. Every year, on the first Sunday of October, the San Domenico Parish at Dazio – overlooking Viale Regina Elena, between Via Manzoni and Via Conte di Torino – becomes the center of a celebration that blends religious devotion with local culture, involving the entire neighborhood in two days of festivities.

Devotion and the Dominican presence

The festival is rooted in the long history of the Dominican Fathers in Messina. Following the historical events that marked their presence in the city—from the suppression of religious orders during the Italian Unification to the return of the Dominicans in the early 20th century—the feast dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary was established in 1931 and has been renewed every year since. For the Dominican community and the neighborhood's devotees, it represents a moment of intense spiritual significance, linked to the figure of Saint Dominic and the tradition of the Holy Rosary.

The procession and religious rites

The religious heart of the festival is the procession of the imposing statue of Our Lady of the Rosary, which travels through the district's streets accompanied by the parish community, pastoral groups, and local scout troops. Sunday begins with a solemn Eucharistic Celebration, animated by the Schola Cantorum Maria del Rosario and attended by civil and religious authorities, followed by the recitation of the Supplica. Upon the return of the procession, the festival concludes with traditional fireworks launched from the convent terrace and the church square.

The White Night on Via Manzoni

Alongside the devotional aspect, the neighborhood celebrates with the White Night, an evening promoted by the parish that brings Via Manzoni to life with shows, music, and activities for all ages. The stage features emerging singers, comedians, and voices from the Messina scene, while hobbyists and artisans display their creations along the street. The Sweet and Savory Festival is a highlight, offering pizza, artisanal gelato, and local specialties that turn the neighborhood into a large, convivial gathering space.
