A day of science outreach for all ages in Piazza Piero Angela
For the first time, Piazza Piero Angela, in the center of Calci (Province of Pisa, Tuscany), transforms into a large open-air laboratory. The Calci Science Festival is a day entirely dedicated to scientific outreach, aimed at audiences of all ages: families, children, students, and enthusiasts can experience science firsthand through themed stands, live experiments, and interactive activities.
The event is organized by Semi di Scienza APS in collaboration with the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa (located in the Certosa di Calci) and is part of the traveling festival ScienzAltro, with the patronage of the Municipality of Calci.
The heart of the event is a path of stands and workshops covering numerous disciplines. Each area is curated by local organizations and associations, making the day a meeting point between research, schools, and the community. Topics range from natural history to microbiology, energy to geology, and mathematics to astronomy, without forgetting scientific environmentalism and reflections on science communication.
The philosophy of the Calci Science Festival is clear: science is method, community, and celebration. For this reason, the square does not host formal lectures but rather experiences to be lived, where observing, experimenting, and asking questions is accessible to everyone, from the youngest children to curious adults. The choice of Piazza Piero Angela, named after the great science communicator, further highlights the spirit of the initiative.
As part of the ScienzAltro circuit, the event aims to become a regular fixture for Calci and the entire Pisan area, while showcasing the local scientific heritage, starting with the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa, one of the oldest and richest museum institutions in Italy.
The first edition of the Calci Science Festival transformed Piazza Piero Angela into a large space dedicated to science, with stands and workshops curated by Semi di Scienza APS, the Natural History Museum of the University of Pisa, and numerous local entities. The day alternated between practical experiences and outreach moments, in a program designed to engage families, children, and enthusiasts.
Stands and workshops open from 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Throughout the day, thematic areas on natural history, microbiology, energy, geology, mathematics, astronomy, scientific environmentalism, and scientific information were available.
