The environment and sustainability festival in the heart of Lucca
The Pianeta Terra Festival is a major event that transforms Lucca every October into a national landmark for discussions on the environment and sustainability. Conceived and organized by Editori Laterza and promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, the festival is led by the scientific direction of neurobiologist and essayist Stefano Mancuso, one of the most prominent voices in the study of plants and ecosystems.
Launched in 2022 under the title A Revolution for Sustainability, the festival has grown with each edition to offer over ninety events across four days, attracting a large and passionate audience to Lucca's historic center. The format is that of a great collective dialogue: scientists, philosophers, psychoanalysts, economists, geopolitical experts, writers, journalists, and artists debate the crucial issues of our time.
Each edition addresses environmental issues from multiple perspectives, intertwining science, culture, and economics. Topics include global warming, extreme weather events, landscape transformation, energy transition, and biodiversity, as well as political, geopolitical, and existential instability. The goal is to provide the public with tools to understand the complexity of the present and imagine a more balanced relationship between humanity and nature.
The festival selects some of the city's most fascinating locations within the famous city walls. Meetings are held in the Church of San Francesco, Palazzo Ducale, the Botanical Garden, the Auditorium del Suffragio, and the Biblioteca Agorร , among other central spaces. This urban distribution allows visitors to experience environmental culture alongside the monumental beauty of Lucca, a Tuscan city rich in history and tradition.
One of the hallmarks of the Pianeta Terra Festival is free admission to all meetings, subject to availability. The festival is a precious opportunity for families, students, and curious minds to attend high-level conferences without economic barriers. Alongside the main meetings, the program offers workshops, school paths, sessions dedicated to younger audiences, and side initiatives like the Pianeta Terra Tech series, focused on startups and sustainable innovation.
Integrated into the rich cultural calendar of the Municipality of Lucca, in the Province of Lucca and the heart of Tuscany, the Pianeta Terra Festival has established itself in just a few years as one of Italy's most important environmental events. It is an opportunity to combine the discovery of one of the region's most beloved art cities with a stimulating and timely cultural experience.
The fifth edition of the Pianeta Terra Festival is scheduled in Lucca from October 8th to 11th, 2026. Once again, the event, conceived and organized by Editori Laterza and promoted by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca, will bring the most evocative venues of the historic center to life with over ninety events dedicated to the environment, science, and the planet's future.
Under the scientific direction of Stefano Mancuso, the festival will offer conferences, dialogues, and workshops with Italian and international guests, always with free admission subject to availability. In early 2026, the Pianeta Terra Tech series, dedicated to startups and sustainable innovation, was also introduced. The detailed program for the 2026 edition, including the schedule of meetings and the list of guests, will be released on the official website in the weeks preceding the event.
Lucca is easily accessible by train, with the station connected to Florence, Pisa, and Viareggio. By car, take the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (Lucca exit). The nearest airport is Pisa Galileo Galilei, about half an hour away. The festival venues are all located in the historic center, inside the walls, and are easily reachable on foot.
Admission to all events is free until capacity is reached. For some meetings, booking may be required: we recommend checking the official website and social media channels for procedures and availability.
