From Nazareth to Bethlehem through the streets of the Madonie hamlet
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Calcarelli Living Nativity is one of the most heartfelt Christmas representations in the Madonie region. It takes place in the hamlet of Calcarelli, a small mountain village at an altitude of about 850 meters, part of the municipality of Castellana Sicula, in the Province of Palermo. The event, titled "From Nazareth to Bethlehem," offers an itinerant route that starts from Piazza Vittoria and winds through the streets of the historic center, reaching the grotto transformed for the occasion into the Nativity scene.
Along the way, visitors encounter costumed actors recreating scenes of life from the past: artisans at work, shepherds, ancient trades, and moments of daily village life, culminating in the arrival at the Holy Family. The narrative accompanying the walk is entrusted to the voice and texts of Santi Cicardo, guiding the spectator on an emotional journey from the house in Nazareth to the grotto in Bethlehem. The soft lighting and the village's picturesque corners make the experience particularly intense during the evening hours.
The event is organized by the Calcarelli community with the support of the local parish and the municipal administration of Castellana Sicula. It is the result of the voluntary work of dozens of residents who contribute their time, costumes, and settings to faithfully reconstruct the places and crafts of the Nativity. At the end of the route, there is a tasting of local products, an opportunity to warm up and enjoy the specialties of the Madonie tradition.
Calcarelli is one of the hamlets of Castellana Sicula, a municipality that serves as one of the gateways to the Madonie Park. The living nativity representation is part of a rich calendar of local Christmas initiatives and contributes to enhancing the historical and religious heritage of this corner of inland Sicily, far from the most crowded tourist circuits.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Calcarelli Living Nativity have not yet been announced. Based on past editions, the performance is typically held during the Christmas period, around the first days of January, in the hamlet of Calcarelli in Castellana Sicula (PA).
The detailed program, performance times, and booking methods will be communicated by the organizers at a later date. It is expected that the itinerant route from Piazza Vittoria to the Nativity grotto will be repeated, featuring narration, costumed actors, and a final tasting of local products.
Hamlet of Calcarelli, Castellana Sicula (PA). The route starts from Piazza Vittoria and ends at the Nativity grotto, along the streets of the historic center.
By car, you can reach Castellana Sicula via the SS120, in the heart of the Madonie. Calcarelli is located just a few minutes from the town center. The reference railway station for the area is in Lercara Friddi on the Palermo-Catania line, but the car remains the most convenient way to reach the mountain village.
The event takes place in winter in a mountain area: warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended for walking through the historic center. Reservations may be required for the visit.
