Bisacquino's White Night: a celebration of sweet onions, olive oil, and music
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the village of Bisacquino, in the province of Palermo, the Busacchinara Onion Festival is the summer highlight that celebrates the region's signature product. Traditionally held in August, the event combines the festival with the Olive Oil Feast and the enchanting White Night, transforming the streets and squares of the historic center into a vibrant trail of flavors, music, and folk traditions.
The true star is the Busacchinara onion, a native variety of Bisacquino prized for its impressive size: bulbs can easily exceed one kilogram. It is easily recognized by its flattened poles, reddish skin, and above all, its sweet and aromatic flavor, with a fleshy, tender pulp that makes it a precious ingredient in local cuisine. During the festival, it can be sampled in numerous traditional preparations, accompanied by local extra virgin olive oil and other typical Sicilian products.
The most anticipated moment is the White Night, when the town remains lively until late at night. Along the streets of the center, food stalls are set up offering tastings of onion and oil-based dishes, alongside craft market stalls and dedicated entertainment areas.
The festival is part of a broader project that promotes Bisacquino as a "village of cinema and arts," as part of cultural, social, and economic regeneration initiatives for small historic towns. In recent years, the festival has been enriched by the Festival of Excellence, dedicated to showcasing the food and wine heritage and the identity of the Sicanian territory, located at the gateway to the Sicani Mountains Park.
Visiting Bisacquino during the festival means discovering an authentic town in the Palermo hinterland, experiencing the convivial atmosphere of a popular feast, and tasting a sweet onion that few other places in Sicily can boast. It is an experience that weaves gastronomy, music, and tradition into a single unforgettable evening.
The 2026 edition of the Busacchinara Onion Festival in Bisacquino is expected, as per tradition, in August. At the moment, the organizers have not yet published official dates and programs. The festival will once again feature the White Night, tasting stalls for onion and oil-based dishes, and the craft market. To find out the final program, please follow the updates from the Municipality of Bisacquino.
Bisacquino is located in the hinterland of the province of Palermo. By car, it can be reached via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (exit towards Corleone) or the SS118 road. The nearest airport is Palermo Falcone-Borsellino, about 1 hour and 30 minutes away.
The festival traditionally takes place in August in the town's historic center.
Access to the event and the White Night is free; tastings and purchases at the stalls are paid.
