The festival of 'La Dolcissima' in Lomellina, between gastronomy and history
In the heart of Lomellina, in the Province of Pavia, the village of Breme has been celebrating its symbolic product for over forty years with the Red Onion Festival. The star is the Breme Red Onion, affectionately called "la Dolcissima" for its delicate flavour without a pungent aftertaste: since 2020 it has been a Slow Food presidium and is recognized as a De.C.O. product (Municipal Designation of Origin).
The festival takes place over two weekends in June. Friday and Saturday are dedicated to dinners, while Sunday also features lunch. During the weekdays, evenings are dedicated to pizza. On the table, the onion is presented in a thousand ways, from traditional Lomellina dishes to more creative preparations. It is also possible to buy fresh onions directly from the producers.
Alongside gastronomy, the event offers a craft market on weekends and a rich cultural program: free visits to the village's historical monuments throughout the day and guided tours on Sunday afternoons. Don't miss the discovery of the Abbey of San Pietro, a High Medieval jewel, and its crypt, testimonies of Breme's Benedictine past.
Organized by the Breme Red Onion Producers' Association, the festival is held in a fully covered area, ensuring the celebration continues even in case of bad weather. It is a model for promoting the territory: a small municipality in the Pavese region that, through an iconic product, tells its rural and monumental history to thousands of visitors.
The 44th edition of the Breme Red Onion Festival is scheduled for the weekends of June 12-13-14 and June 19-20-21, 2026. The star is, as always, the "la Dolcissima" Red Onion, a Slow Food presidium and De.C.O. product, celebrated in all its gastronomic variations.
The festival combines dining with the historical heritage of the Lomellina village, including visits to the monuments and the Abbey complex of San Pietro. The event is held in a fully covered space, ensuring the celebration continues even in case of rain.
