The medieval village of Valleriana dresses up in flowers for a day of celebration
When late spring arrives, the small village of Boveglio, a hamlet of the Villa Basilica municipality in the province of Lucca, transforms into a triumph of colors and scents. Boveglio in Fiore is the community festival that invites residents and visitors every year to rediscover this corner of the Valleriana valley, nestled among the woods rising toward the Pizzorne, on the border with the Val di Lima. For an entire day, the windows, sills, and stone doorways of the village are filled with flowers and arrangements, creating an atmosphere that blends the beauty of the Tuscan landscape with the warmth of village life.
The heart of the event is the competition for the most flowered window: the village houses are adorned with flowers and decorations, and the most beautiful display is awarded during the day. Visitors themselves vote for their favorite window in a game that involves the entire community and highlights the medieval and Renaissance architecture of Boveglio, with its narrow paved alleys, stone portals, and the clock tower that dominates the upper part of the town.
Along the village streets, a market unfolds with stalls featuring artisanal products, plants, and artworks, perfect for a stroll among local creations and floral-themed ideas. Completing the day are the food stalls managed by the Pro Loco, where you can taste local specialties like tortelli, enjoy a sandwich, and, for the little ones, cotton candy. It is the ideal opportunity to combine a day trip with the discovery of the cuisine and flavors of the Lucca mountains.
A village with ancient origins, mentioned as early as 757 and once home to a castle that no longer exists, Boveglio preserves medieval, Renaissance, and 19th-century buildings that make it a fascinating destination even outside the festival. Just outside the town stands the church of Santi Jacopo e Ginesio, of Romanesque origin and remodeled in the 16th century. Boveglio in Fiore is therefore also an invitation to explore one of the most characteristic places in the province of Lucca and inland Tuscany, far from the beaten path.
The event is organized by the local Pro Loco with the patronage of the Municipality of Villa Basilica and represents one of the most cherished moments of the year for the hamlet. Admission is free, and the day is designed for families, flower and gardening enthusiasts, and anyone wishing to spend a Sunday in the open air in an authentic Tuscan village.
