Leonardo's hometown transforms into an open-air nativity scene museum
Presepi Geniali is the Christmas event that annually transforms the historic center of Vinci, in the heart of the Montalbano area near Florence, into a vast open-air museum. Promoted by the Vincincentro Natural Shopping Center in collaboration with the Santa Croce Parish and the Municipality of Vinci, the initiative brings the magic of Christmas to the streets, squares, and most characteristic corners of the town that gave birth to Leonardo da Vinci.
The heart of the event is a widespread route that winds through the town: along the streets of the center, in shop windows, on house doors, and in courtyards, dozens of nativity scenes created by residents, artisans, associations, and shopkeepers come to life. A map guides visitors to discover the various works, each numbered and signposted.
Presepi Geniali is also a competition open to everyone: each installation is numbered and can be voted on by the public, both online on the shopping center's Facebook page and via ballots available in participating shops. The event traditionally concludes on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, when the Befana makes her entrance in Piazza Masi, bringing sweets for the children, and the winning nativity scenes are announced.
Launched in 2024, the event has quickly established itself as one of the most cherished Christmas appointments in the Municipality of Vinci. The first edition featured over forty nativity scenes scattered throughout the historic center, a sign of the community's enthusiastic participation. Walking through Vinci during the holidays, among the nativity scenes and lights, means experiencing the Tuscan village in one of its most evocative guises, combining the tradition of the nativity scene with the creativity of its inhabitants.
Presepi Geniali returns to Vinci from November 29, 2026, kicking off Christmas in Leonardo's village. Throughout the holiday period, the historic center hosts the usual widespread route of traditional, artistic, illuminated, mechanical, and recycled-material nativity scenes, set up by the town's residents, artisans, and shopkeepers.
As per tradition, each nativity scene is numbered and can be voted on by the public to elect the most beautiful one. The event concludes on January 6, 2027, the day of the Epiphany, with the arrival of the Befana in Piazza Masi and the awards ceremony for the winners. The detailed program of side events will be communicated by the organization closer to the start of the event.
Vinci can be reached by car from the FI-PI-LI highway (Empoli exit) or from the main road towards Montalbano. The nearest train station is Empoli, on the Florence-Pisa line, from which buses to Vinci depart.
The nativity scenes are set up in the historic center of Vinci and can be visited freely along the town's streets throughout the Christmas period, until January 6th.
Visiting the nativity scenes along the route is free. In case of rain, some activities take place in the rooms adjacent to the Santa Croce church.
