A city-wide Christmas celebration in the historic center of Lucca, featuring markets, lights, and an ice rink on the Walls.
Every winter, the historic center of Lucca, in the heart of northern Tuscany, turns into a vast, city-wide Christmas village. Lucca Magical Christmas is the event that the Municipality of Lucca dedicates to the holidays, enlivening the squares, alleys, and the famous Renaissance Walls for over a month with markets, lights, shows, and artistic installations. It is not a single event but a widespread calendar that invites residents and visitors to explore the city on foot, guided by lights from one square to the next.
The heart of the event is Piazza Napoleone, which hosts the French Christmas Village, featuring characteristic wooden chalets and a selection of artisanal products, gift ideas, and gastronomic specialties from across the Alps. It is one of the most anticipated appointments of the season and one of the few Italian stops for this traveling village. Alongside the main market, the city offers more intimate spaces: in Piazza San Frediano, a market dedicated to local artisans and creatives comes to life, while near the Cathedral, the Antique Marketโone of the oldest in Italyโtakes place.
One of the most beloved attractions is the Ice Park set up at height, allowing you to skate while looking at the city from above. The large, illuminated ice rink, surrounded by decorated trees, is one of the experiences that best captures the spirit of Lucca Magical Christmas: a family-friendly holiday, enjoyed outdoors along the panoramic path of the Walls.
Throughout the event, the historic center lights up with light installations and artistic projections created by designers and light artists, visible in the evening hours in the main squares. There is no shortage of traditional nativity scenes set up in churches and city spaces, concert series featuring gospel choirs, jazz ensembles, and orchestras, and a village dedicated to children. The inauguration coincides with the lighting of the large Christmas tree in Piazza San Michele, while the grand finale is entrusted to the Befana Festival on January 6th.
Visiting Lucca during the holidays means discovering one of the most fascinating art cities in Tuscany in a particularly evocative setting. The intact city walls, towers, Romanesque churches, and cozy squares provide a natural backdrop for an authentic Christmas, far from the frenzy of large metropolises. Lucca Magical Christmas, promoted by the Municipality of Lucca, is now one of the benchmark winter events for the entire Province of Lucca and attracts a constantly growing audience every year.
For the 2026 holidays, Lucca Magical Christmas will return to light up the historic center of Lucca, in Tuscany, with its usual widespread program of markets, lights, nativity scenes, and family activities. The annual event calendar of the Municipality of Lucca confirms the event between late November 2026 and January 6, 2027.
Exact dates and the detailed program for the 2026 edition have not yet been made official. In line with previous editions, we expect the French Christmas Village in Piazza Napoleone, artisanal markets, light installations in the squares, the Ice Park skating rink on the Walls, and the Befana Festival on January 6th. The full program will be published on official Lucca tourism channels in the weeks leading up to the start of the event.
Lucca is served by the central train station, just a few minutes' walk from the historic center, with connections from Florence, Pisa, and Viareggio. By car, it can be reached via the A11 Firenze-Mare motorway (Lucca Est and Lucca Ovest exits); it is recommended to leave the car in the parking lots outside the Walls. The nearest airport is the Galileo Galilei in Pisa, about half an hour away.
The event takes place between late November and January 6th. Markets, the ice rink, and light installations have their own hours, generally extended on weekends and holidays.
Access to the markets and light installations is free; the ice rink and some activities require a ticket. It is advisable to consult the official Lucca tourism website for the updated program.
