About Borgo di Gusto

Borgo di Gusto is the food and wine festival that enlivens the historic center of Civitaluparella every summer. This small medieval village in the province of Chieti is perched at an altitude of 900 meters on the spurs of the Majella mountains. It is a culinary journey through alleys, stairways, and scenic viewpoints, where you can taste typical products from the Abruzzo hinterland: artisanal cured meats, mountain cheeses, pallotte cac'e ove, wood-fired pizzas and focaccias, honey, preserves, and traditional sweets. Folk music, roaming performances, and activities for children complete a free-entry festive evening.

Borgo di Gusto: the taste of authentic Abruzzo

Borgo di Gusto is the most anticipated summer event in Civitaluparella, a small town of just over three hundred inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the Abruzzo hinterland. The village, perched at an altitude of 900 meters on a rocky spur between the Sangro River and the Parello stream, opens its alleys and ancient squares for an evening dedicated to the flavors, traditions, and atmosphere of the Abruzzo mountains.

A culinary journey through the village alleys

The event transforms the medieval historic center into a food and wine itinerary: you walk through alleys and narrow stairways up to Piazza Marconi, where the town hall and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo overlook the square, while at higher elevations, you can glimpse the remains of the residence of the Caldora family, the feudal lords of the territory. Along the route, ancient stone houses open up to host temporary cellars and small shops, and at each stop, local producers and artisans share their deep connection with their land.

Traditional flavors

The heart of the festival lies in the typical products of inland Abruzzo, prepared according to ancient local recipes. Specialties you can taste include:

  • Foglie e patan, the traditional peasant dish of greens and potatoes
  • Pallotte cac'e ove, the famous bread, cheese, and egg meatballs
  • Tagliariel e faciuol, handmade tagliatelle with beans
  • Artisanal cured meats and mountain cheeses
  • Wood-fired pizzas and focaccias
  • Honey, preserves, and traditional sweets

The tastings are accompanied by Abruzzo wines and liqueurs, which, along with the dishes, are the protagonists of a genuine cuisine deeply rooted in the territory.

Music, performances, and atmosphere

Beyond the gastronomy, Borgo di Gusto offers folk music, roaming performances, photography exhibitions, and activities designed for children, making the atmosphere festive and welcoming. It is an opportunity to experience the village at night, when the stone houses and the panoramic views over the Sangro Valley light up and the streets fill with visitors.

A Pro Loco event

The event is organized by the Pro Loco Civitaluparella Caldora, which manages the route and visitor hospitality every year. Admission is free, and a shuttle service is available to reach the historic center. Borgo di Gusto is a chance to discover one of the most charming villages in the province of Chieti and to rediscover the authentic flavors of Abruzzo in one of the most characteristic festivals of the regional summer.
