The sporting challenge between the districts of La Morra in the heart of the Langhe
The Borghi Tournament is one of the most cherished events in La Morra, the iconic Barolo village perched on the hills of the Langhe, in the Province of Cuneo (Piedmont). It is far more than just a sports tournament; it is a spirited rivalry between the districts and hamlets that make up the municipality, an occasion that rekindles local pride and a sense of community among residents every year.
Established in 1980 and relaunched in 2025 with an expanded multidisciplinary format, the tournament features eight districts: Centro-Borgo, Fornace, Aie, Case Sparse, Annunziata, Rivalta, Santa Maria, and Verduno. Each district fields its own teams, supported by a dedicated group of volunteers who manage the organisation of the match evenings.
The modern format is a true points-based competition spanning various disciplines designed to engage multiple generations: 5-a-side football, padel, beach volleyball, mountain bike and gravel relays on the trails around the village, and even a Scala 40 card tournament for those who prefer cards to physical competition. Matches are held over several evenings, with the overall ranking decided only on the final day.
The heart of the event is the Beppe Tarditi sports centre in the Tampasso area, recently renovated and managed by the Coesioni Sociali cooperative. Here, on late spring evenings, the stands fill with spectators cheering for their home district in an atmosphere of healthy competition, friendship, and village celebration.
Promoted by the Municipality of La Morra in partnership with the Langa Calcio sports association, the Borghi Tournament is much more than a competition: it is an event that showcases the region, strengthens ties between districts, and demonstrates how amateur sport can be a formidable tool for social cohesion. With over 170 participants and completely free admission, it is an event that captures the authentic soul of a Langhe village.
