Extemporaneous art around the Saint Joseph bonfire in Monteiasi
Bonfires and Colors is the longest-running event organized by the Gruppo Anonimo '74, a cultural association in Monteiasi, a small town in the province of Taranto, Apulia. Established in 1974, the same year the group was founded, the initiative has since accompanied the popular tradition of the Saint Joseph bonfire with a moment of cultural and artistic expression open to the entire community.
During the evening of the bonfire lighting, volunteers from the Gruppo Anonimo '74 distribute decorated drawing paper (A4 or A3 upon request) at the gazebo set up for the occasion. On these sheets, participants capture their immediate sensations and emotions sparked by the fire, without any imposed themes. It is not limited to drawings and paintings; thoughts, poems, and reflections on other media are also welcome.
The hallmark of this initiative is the absence of any form of competition: there are no rankings or awards. Every participant receives only a small symbolic souvenir. The stated goal is to foster a sense of community belonging, involving all age groups, from preschool children to adults.
The works collected during the bonfire evening do not stay hidden away; they are gathered and displayed in a collective exhibition at the Gruppo Anonimo '74 headquarters, located at Via Mazzini 24 in Monteiasi. This is the moment when the community gathers to recognize its own artistic voices and share the perspectives of both young and old on the night of the fire.
The Saint Joseph bonfire in Monteiasi is part of the rich tradition of Apulian fire rituals, lit throughout the region around March 19th. Due to its identity-forming value and continuity, the Monteiasi bonfire has received institutional attention, with proposals to include it among the fire rituals protected by Apulian regional law.
The 52nd edition of Bonfires and Colors in Monteiasi was set for Wednesday, March 18, 2026, alongside the lighting of the Saint Joseph bonfire. However, adverse weather conditions forced the postponement of the fire evening to Saturday, March 21, 2026.
As per tradition, volunteers from the Gruppo Anonimo '74 distributed A4 or A3 drawing paper to those present, on which they could capture the emotions sparked by the bonfire on the spot, without any imposed theme: not just drawings and paintings, but also thoughts and poems. The collected works were then displayed in the collective exhibition on Saturday, March 21, from 6:00 PM, at the association's headquarters at Via Mazzini 24. No competitions or prizes, just a small symbolic souvenir for every participant.
