About Faggiano Living Nativity

The Faggiano Living Nativity is one of the most beloved and acclaimed Christmas pageants in Puglia. Established in 1992 and organized by the Associazione per le Tradizioni Popolari APS, it takes place in the evocative natural setting of the Campana, a hilly, rocky area just steps from the center of this town in the province of Taranto. Over one hundred costumed participants bring the Nativity Grotto and ancient rural crafts to life, amidst caves, paths, and scenery that recreate the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. An emotional journey, repeatedly recognized as one of the best living nativity scenes in Italy.

The award-winning living nativity of the Ionian Puglia

The Faggiano Living Nativity, in the heart of the Province of Taranto, is one of the most famous and appreciated Christmas representations in Puglia. Its history began in 1992 and continues uninterrupted thanks to the commitment of the Associazione per le Tradizioni Popolari APS, which involves the entire community of the Town of Faggiano every year in building and animating the nativity scene. Over the years, the event has received significant recognition, including the title of Best Living Nativity in Italy and the designation of "City of the Nativity" awarded by the Puglia Region.

The natural scenery of the Campana

The performance takes place in the natural site of the Campana, along Via Giuseppe Verdi, a hilly and rocky area located just a short walk from the town center. Caves, rock crevices, and illuminated paths become the ideal backdrop to reconstruct the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago: the route leads visitors through a true village, up to the Nativity Grotto, which represents the emotional heart of the entire visit.

Over one hundred participants and ancient crafts

The nativity comes to life thanks to over one hundred participants in period costumes, who evoke the daily life and crafts of the past: the blacksmith, the shoemaker, the basket weaver, the spinners, the fisherman, and the baker. Along the way, you can breathe in the scents of freshly baked bread and hear the sounds of artisan workshops, in an atmosphere that combines popular faith, rural memory, and a sense of community. The attention to costumes and scenic details is one of the elements that has made the event famous well beyond the borders of Puglia.

The bond with Greccio and the Magi procession

Over the years, the Faggiano Living Nativity has forged a pact of friendship with Greccio, the town in Lazio where Saint Francis of Assisi created the first living representation of the Nativity in 1223: during the Christmas period, a delegation from Greccio usually visits Faggiano, testifying to the spiritual and cultural value of the event. The opening period traditionally concludes on January 6th, the day of the Epiphany, with the evocative procession of the Magi reaching the hut.

A defining event for the local area

Every year, the Living Nativity attracts thousands of visitors to Faggiano from all over Puglia and beyond, becoming one of the most anticipated events in the Christmas calendar of the Ionian province. More than just a show, it is a moment of collective participation that strengthens the town's identity and passes on the popular and religious traditions of the territory to new generations.
