The oldest Christmas pageant in Puglia, set within the Grotte del Vallone

The Crispiano Living Nativity, located in the heart of the province of Taranto, is considered the oldest and most famous Christmas pageant in Puglia. Its history began in 1986, when the Pro Loco of Crispiano decided to recreate the Nativity in a ravine once inhabited by Basilian monks. Since then, the event has become a cornerstone of the town's identity, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors over the decades and gaining coverage on national television programs.
The traditional venue for the event is the Grotte del Vallone, a rocky trail about one kilometer long that winds through prickly pears, araucarias, and pomegranate trees, leading to an 11th-century abbey dedicated to Saint Mary. The path, illuminated and made even more evocative by artificial snow and the sound of bagpipes, transforms the ravine into a small Bethlehem where time seems to have stood still.
The heart of the pageant lies in the over 200 performers in period costumes, who animate meticulously reconstructed settings. Along the path, ancient, long-forgotten trades are brought back to life: the cheesemaker, the basket weaver, the seamstresses, and the farmers. Women prepare fresh pasta, bread, and cheeses, enveloping visitors in intense and authentic aromas. The particular attention to the detail of the costumes has made the Crispiano nativity a model requested by other towns in Puglia.
Over the years, the pageant has brought the magic of Crispiano's Christmas beyond the town's borders. In January 2025, for instance, an exclusive edition was hosted in the historic center of Manduria, confirming the prestige achieved by the Pro Loco's initiative. However, the bond with the territory remains very strong: the Living Nativity is an integral part of Crispiano's Christmas calendar and its cultural identity.
The pageant is traditionally held during the Christmas season, between the second half of December and Epiphany. For the public, it is an opportunity to experience Christmas in an authentic way, immersed in the history and folk traditions of the Ionian Puglia.
The program and official dates for the 2026 edition of the Crispiano Living Nativity have not yet been published by the Pro Loco Crispiano. The event is traditionally held during the Christmas season, between the second half of December and Epiphany, within the evocative Grotte del Vallone in the province of Taranto. Information will be updated as soon as it becomes available on the organization's official channels.
Crispiano is located in the province of Taranto, along the road connecting Taranto to Martina Franca. By car, it can be reached via the SS172 dei Trulli; the reference railway stations are those of Taranto and Martina Franca (Sud-Est line), just a few kilometers from the center.
The route through the Grotte del Vallone is outdoors and partly on rocky terrain: comfortable shoes and warm winter clothing are recommended. Always check the updated dates and times on the official Pro Loco Crispiano channels before setting off.
