The Nativity scene brought to life in the white village of the Itria Valley
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In Locorotondo, amidst the whitewashed alleys and the characteristic cummerse that define the skyline of one of Italy's most beautiful villages, Christmas turns into a story. The Locorotondo Living Nativity has become one of the most beloved traditions in the Itria Valley, in the province of Bari: a path where the story of the Nativity is not just observed, but experienced, immersed in the sounds, scents, and gestures of a bygone era.
Promoted by the San Giorgio Martire Parish together with the Pro Loco Locorotondo, and sponsored by the Municipality of Locorotondo, the event involves over fifty participants in period costumes every year. Working alongside them are the Agesci-Gruppo Scout Locorotondo 1 and the Catholic Action, in an organizational effort that mobilizes a significant part of the local community.
The heart of the performance is the Sottovilla of Locorotondo, an enchanting spot nestled in greenery and overlooking the panoramic views of the Itria Valley. The route begins at the artisan village, set up in the rotunda, and winds along the staircase: here, theatrical scenes of the Nativity, living tableaux, and workshops of ancient crafts follow one another, where blacksmiths, weavers, and artisans reenact the daily life of Palestine from two thousand years ago.
Each edition chooses a central theme inspired by the Christmas message. In the last edition, the theme was The Search for Peace, with the figure of Saint Francis of Assisi serving as an ideal guide, marking the eight-hundredth anniversary of his death. It is this dialogue between religious tradition and contemporary reflection that gives the Locorotondo Nativity an identity that goes beyond a simple scenic reconstruction.
Included in the broader Christmas in Locorotondo program, the Living Nativity is the perfect opportunity to combine your visit with exploring the historic center, the trulli, and the cummerse that make this Apulian town an unmissable stop in the hills of the Bari province.
At the moment, the organizers of the Locorotondo Living Nativity have not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition. Based on past editions, the performance is expected to return between late December and January 6th, starting from the artisan village and continuing along the Sottovilla staircase.
The detailed program, including times, theme, and access methods, will be published by the San Giorgio Martire Parish and the Pro Loco Locorotondo in the weeks leading up to the event. This page will be updated as soon as information becomes available.
