The masked party in the heart of a small Nisseno village
With just under 500 inhabitants, Bompensiere is the least populated municipality in the province of Caltanissetta, a small village nestled at an altitude of 283 meters in the Sicilian hinterland, in the heart of the Nisseno area. It is precisely in this intimate setting that Carnival takes on a special value: it is not the grand parade of floats seen in neighboring cities, but an authentic village festival where the participation of the entire community is what truly counts.
The heart of the event is the afternoon masked party held at the "P. Mancuso" youth center. Children, teenagers, and families gather in costume for an afternoon of games, music, confetti, and streamers. It is a simple and fraternal occasion, as the organizers themselves describe it, designed to have fun together and pass on the joy of carnival traditions to the younger generation.
Carnival in Bompensiere has its roots in the parish and community life of the town: for years, the party was also held in the hall of the SS. Crocifisso Mother Church, with catechism students, parents, and teachers gathered to celebrate in a simple way. Today, the event is promoted by the municipal administration, which invites the entire population to take part every year, continuing a custom that marks the village's festive calendar.
Visiting Bompensiere during Carnival means discovering a little-known corner of central Sicily, amidst the clay hills of the province of Caltanissetta. The town, dedicated to the Most Holy Crucifix, its patron saint, preserves the genuine atmosphere of small inland centers, where festivals are not spectacles for tourists but true moments of collective life. Carnival is one of the best opportunities to experience this authenticity.
The 2026 Bompensiere Carnival was held on February 16, 2026, with the usual afternoon masked party at the "P. Mancuso" youth center. The invitation to participate came directly from Mayor Salvatore Virciglio, who called upon the children, teenagers, and families of the Nisseno village to gather.
As per tradition, the afternoon was dedicated to costumes, games, and music, in an atmosphere of family celebration and strong community cohesion. For the occasion, a poster with the program of festivities was distributed, confirming the central role this recurrence plays in the life of the smallest town in the province of Caltanissetta.
Event open to all citizens upon the invitation of Mayor Salvatore Virciglio. The official poster for the festivities was released by the Municipality for the event.

Bompensiere can be reached by car from the SS640 Caltanissetta-Agrigento road, taking the exit towards the Nisseno hinterland; the village is about 40 km from Caltanissetta. The reference railway station is in Caltanissetta.
Activities are concentrated at the "P. Mancuso" youth center, in the town center of Bompensiere (province of Caltanissetta).
The masked party is free and open to all citizens.
As it is a small village, local accommodation is limited: for overnight stays, it is best to look in Caltanissetta or nearby towns. We recommend wearing a costume to fully experience the festive atmosphere.
