Some of the most beautiful papier-mâché floats in Sicily
The Biancavilla Carnival is one of the most beloved events in the Sicilian carnival season, taking place in the historic center of Biancavilla, at the foot of Mount Etna in the province of Catania. The absolute stars of the show are the grand papier-mâché floats, built over the preceding months by local master artisans who pass down a technique rooted in patience, creativity, and passion. Due to the quality and detail of its floats, Biancavilla is considered second in Sicily only to the famous Acireale Carnival.
The heart of the event is Piazza Roma, where the Palatenda (marquee) is set up as the Carnival headquarters, hosting music, dancing, shows, and entertainment. The grand parades of floats and masked groups start from the Villa delle Favare area, traveling along Via Vittorio Emanuele to reach Piazza Roma in a crescendo of confetti, costumes, and music. The peak days are traditionally concentrated between Fat Thursday and Shrove Tuesday, with events specifically designed for schools, families, and children.
During the festival, the streets of the center fill with masked groups, costume parades, DJ sets, and tastings of traditional Sicilian carnival sweets and dishes. There is no shortage of spaces dedicated to children, featuring entertainment, princesses, and superheroes, as well as major concerts that close the event with nationally renowned guests.
The Biancavilla Carnival is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic popular tradition of the Etna region, celebrated with pride by the entire community.
The 2026 edition enlivened the center of Biancavilla with parades of papier-mâché floats, masked groups, live music, and DJ sets. The main days were concentrated around Piazza Roma, where the Palatenda hosted shows and entertainment for all ages.
Bad weather affected the schedule: the grand parade, initially planned for mid-February, was postponed to Saturday, February 21, 2026. The floats departed from the Villa delle Favare area along Via Vittorio Emanuele, reaching Piazza Roma in the afternoon. Admission to all events was free.
Biancavilla is located in the province of Catania, at the foot of Mount Etna. By car, it can be reached via the SS121 Catania-Paternò road. The nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa (approx. 40 km). By train and bus, you can arrive in Catania and continue with regional connections to Biancavilla.
The parades and shows take place in the town center, between Villa delle Favare and Piazza Roma, where the Palatenda is set up.
Access to the parades and events is free.
