The patronal feasts of Saint Placid, Saint Zeno, and Our Lady of Alms
In the town of Biancavilla, in the Province of Catania, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Etna, the first weeks of October coincide with the most important celebrations of the year. The Ottobre Sacro brings together in just a few days the patronal feasts dedicated to the city's three protectors: Saint Placid, the main patron since 1709, Saint Zeno, the first patron of Arbëreshë origin, and Our Lady of Alms, venerated since the town's founding through an ancient Byzantine icon that arrived in 1482 with Greek-Albanian refugees. It is a period that the mayor and the entire community describe as a turning point, a sort of local "New Year" where the sense of belonging is renewed.
The religious core of the festivities is the Basilica of Santa Maria dell'Elemosina, from which the solemn processions depart. The sacred calendar follows a traditional sequence: October 2nd is dedicated to Saint Zeno, with a procession of the statue and relic through the historic center; October 4th marks the solemnity of Our Lady of Alms, with the procession of the dark-faced sacred icon housed on a richly adorned float; October 5th celebrates Saint Placid, a Benedictine monk and martyr, whose relics (a bone from his right arm, which arrived in 1602) are kept in the Basilica. On the evening of October 6th, the traditional "Tour of the Saints" and the concluding rites seal the week of devotion.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Ottobre Sacro offers a packed civil program in Piazza Roma and the city's landmark locations. There is always the evocative Arbëreshë historical re-enactment, which recalls the Greek-Albanian origins of Biancavilla, as well as the show that blends fireworks and live music. Over the years, the program has hosted big names in Italian music, parades of Bersaglieri bands and fanfares, book presentations on local history, and initiatives like the Etna Wine Forum, which promotes Biancavilla as the "Third Gate of Etna" and a destination for wine tourism.
For those visiting Sicily in autumn, the Ottobre Sacro of Biancavilla is an opportunity to immerse themselves in a deep-rooted popular tradition, where the sacred and the secular have coexisted for over three centuries at the foot of Mount Etna.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Ottobre Sacro are set for the first days of October, according to the traditional liturgical calendar of Biancavilla. The three main religious events are confirmed: the procession of Saint Zeno on October 2nd, the solemnity of Our Lady of Alms on October 4th, and the feast of Saint Placid on October 5th–6th, with the procession of the relics from the Basilica of Santa Maria dell'Elemosina and the "Tour of the Saints".
The detailed civil program, including the names of the concert guests in Piazza Roma, the shows, and the time of the concluding pyromusical, has not yet been published; it will be released by the Municipality of Biancavilla and the Basilica in the weeks preceding the event. As per tradition, the Arbëreshë historical re-enactment and related cultural initiatives are expected.
Biancavilla (CT) is located on the slopes of Mount Etna, along the SS121 road. By car from the A18/A19 motorway, take the exit for Catania and continue towards Paternò and Adrano. By train, the reference station is the Circumetnea; the nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about 50 km away.
The feasts take place in the first days of October (traditionally around October 2nd–10th), with the highlights occurring between October 4th and 6th.
Religious processions and shows in Piazza Roma are free and open to everyone.
The historic center is very crowded during processions and concerts: it is advisable to arrive early and park in areas outside the center.
