The Southern Italian wine festival in the heart of Via Veneto
Beviamoci Sud Rome is one of the most anticipated events in the Roman wine calendar. This festival is entirely dedicated to the wines of Southern Italy and, edition after edition, has become a benchmark for those looking to understand the evolution of Southern viticulture. The event takes place in Rome, the capital of the Metropolitan City of Rome and the Lazio region. Since 2026, it has found a prestigious home in the Ludovisi district: The Westin Excelsior, a historic hotel on Via Vittorio Veneto, just steps from Villa Borghese and Piazza Barberini.
The heart of the festival is the tasting tables: producers are present in person to pour their wines and share stories about their vineyards, vintages, and cellar philosophies. It is a simple yet effective format that allows the public to travel in just a few hours from the volcanic whites of Mount Etna to the structured reds of Irpinia, or from Puglian Primitivo to Sardinian Cannonau, with the opportunity to compare styles and territories directly.
Alongside the tasting tables, there is a program of exclusive thematic masterclasses organized in collaboration with protection consortia and led by journalist and wine critic Luciano Pignataro, who also serves as the event's technical director. Each session explores a specific grape variety or denomination, comparing multiple wineries and vintages—a format that helps participants understand terroir differences far better than a casual tasting at the counter.
A highlight of the 2026 edition is the Eccellenze di Beviamoci Sud wine competition, reserved for participating wineries. Samples are evaluated in blind tastings by a qualified jury chaired by Luciano Pignataro, with certificates of merit awarded to the most representative labels. This is accompanied by the Ambasciatori del Sud (Ambassadors of the South) award, dedicated to restaurateurs, wine merchants, and communicators who champion Southern wine in their daily work.
Beviamoci Sud was born from the commitment of Marco Cum, founder of Riserva Grande, and Andrea Petrini, with technical direction by Luciano Pignataro. The approach has remained consistent since the first edition: selecting representative wineries, giving space to both historic estates and small artisanal producers, and crafting a narrative of the South that goes beyond the most famous labels.
For those living in or visiting Rome at the end of January, the festival is a unique opportunity to taste dozens of wines in a single afternoon that are rarely found together in a wine shop. The atmosphere is not that of a sprawling, impersonal trade fair; the space remains intimate, and direct dialogue with producers is the true hallmark of the event. It is also an excellent starting point for planning a broader wine tour of Southern Italy based on what you have tasted in person.
With the 2026 edition, the festival moved to a new venue: The Westin Excelsior Rome at Via Vittorio Veneto 125, in the Ludovisi district. Over two days, Saturday, January 31, and Sunday, February 1, the event welcomed the public from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with producers present at the tasting tables to share their wines directly.
The educational program featured five masterclasses developed with protection consortia and led by Luciano Pignataro, the event's technical director. Topics ranged from the reds of Salento to the volcanic whites and reds of Mount Etna, as well as Primitivo di Manduria and indigenous Calabrian varieties. This edition also introduced the Eccellenze di Beviamoci Sud competition, reserved for participating wineries and judged via blind tasting, and confirmed the Ambasciatori del Sud awards for restaurateurs, wine merchants, and communicators.
All masterclasses were led by Luciano Pignataro and reserved for a limited number of participants, with mandatory booking.
The Westin Excelsior Rome, Via Vittorio Veneto 125, 00187 Rome (Ludovisi district). The main entrance is located along Via Veneto, halfway between Piazza Barberini and Porta Pinciana.
For the 2026 edition, admission to the tasting tables is 30 euros for one day and 50 euros for both days. A reduced rate of 25 euros is available for accredited sommeliers (AIS, FIS, FISAR, and similar associations), with a 7-euro supplement for the tasting kit including a glass and holder. Purchasing a masterclass ticket includes free entry to the event. Public opening hours: 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM on both days.
Masterclasses have limited seating and sell out quickly; it is best to book online as soon as the program is released. Since wine tasting is involved, it is preferable to reach the venue by public transport. The Ludovisi district offers a wide range of hotels and restaurants within walking distance.
