About Ottobrata Monticiana

Every October, the Monti district—the ancient heart of Rome—transforms into a vibrant neighborhood festival spread across its squares, narrow alleys, and staircases. The Ottobrata Monticiana brings Piazza della Madonna dei Monti and the surrounding streets to life with live music, performances, guided tours, craft workshops, Roman poetry, and local gastronomy. This popular, free event, organized by the Associazione Rione Monti since 1984, celebrates the neighborhood's traditions and shares them with both locals and visitors.

The festival of Rome's oldest district

The Ottobrata Monticiana is the grand autumn festival of the Monti district, the first rione of Rome and one of the most charming areas in the historic center, nestled between the Colosseum, the Imperial Forums, and Santa Maria Maggiore. For three days in October, its squares, alleys, and staircases become the stage for a widespread event that weaves together music, culture, craftsmanship, and local memory. The festival takes place within the Municipality I of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome (Lazio), and preserves the authentic community spirit of a neighborhood where traditions seem "almost forgotten, but never lost."

A tradition born in 1984

Organized by the Associazione Rione Monti in collaboration with numerous local entities—including Arti e Mestieri de Monti, Incinque Open Art, the Via della Madonna dei Monti association, ASD Audace Roma, and FITeL Lazio—the Ottobrata has its roots in 1984 and has grown year after year to become a staple of the Roman autumn. Each edition revolves around a theme of sharing and inclusion, aiming to keep the district's identity alive and open it to those who visit.

What to experience during the Ottobrata

The heart of the festival is Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, where concerts, choirs, Roman song performances, and artistic acts take place. However, the entire district participates: Piazza della Suburra, the Scalinata degli Ibernesi, and historic workshops host a rich and varied program.

  • Live music and entertainment: Roman songs, cover bands, swing, dialect poetry, and comedy.
  • Free guided tours: Thematic itineraries on the Middle Ages in Monti, Michelangelo, the "feminine" side of the district, with special access to convents, historical archives, and museums.
  • Workshops and crafts: From micromosaics to children's activities, as well as talks on olive oil, health, and archaeology.
  • Gastronomy and local products: Traditional flavors along the neighborhood streets.
  • The Monticiana Lottery, an unmissable tradition that has accompanied the festival for decades.

Why it's worth a visit

The Ottobrata Monticiana is not just another fair: it is the way a neighborhood tells its own story. Walking through the alleys of Monti during the festival means discovering an authentic, popular side of Rome, far from the beaten tourist paths, made of intimate squares, artisans, poets, and music echoing against Renaissance facades. It is a free experience open to everyone, perfect for families, curious travelers, and history enthusiasts.

Ottobrata Monticiana — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Ottobrata Monticiana is expected, as per tradition, in October in the Monti district of Rome. As of the time of writing, the Associazione Rione Monti has not yet officially announced the dates and program for the new edition.

The Ottobrata Monticiana 2026 will be held, according to custom, on a weekend in October in the Monti district, the first rione of Rome. At the moment, the official dates and the detailed program have not yet been published by the Associazione Rione Monti.

Based on previous editions, the event is expected to feature its traditional formula: live music and Roman songs in Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, performances in Piazza della Suburra and on the Scalinata degli Ibernesi, free guided tours of churches, convents, and historical archives, craft workshops, the Monticiana Lottery, and traditional flavors along the neighborhood streets. The program will be updated as soon as it is published on the official website.

Programme Ottobrata Monticiana 2026

The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. It will be announced by the Associazione Rione Monti closer to the event, presumably in the weeks leading up to the October festival.
