About Homage to the Immaculate

Every December 8th, for the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Piazza di Spagna and the nearby Piazza Mignanelli become the spiritual heart of Rome. At the foot of the Column of the Immaculate Conception, firefighters ascend at dawn on an aerial ladder to place a floral tribute in the arms of the Madonna, while in the afternoon, the Pope performs the traditional act of veneration. A sober and heartfelt ceremony that unites faith, history, and civic identity in the Municipality of Rome, in the Lazio region.

A civic and religious rite in the heart of Rome

The Homage to the Immaculate Conception is one of the most deeply felt traditions in the Roman calendar. Every December 8th, on the occasion of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the scenic Piazza di Spagna and the adjacent Piazza Mignanelli, in the heart of the Municipality of Rome, transform into a place of popular devotion. At the foot of the Column of the Immaculate Conception, faithful, pilgrims, and civil and religious authorities gather for an event that weaves together faith, historical memory, and civic identity.

The Column of the Immaculate Conception

The monument was inaugurated on December 8, 1857, by the will of Pope Pius IX, three years after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception with the Ineffabilis Deus bull. Designed by architect Luigi Poletti, the cipollino marble column, nearly twelve meters high, supports the bronze statue of the Madonna, a work by sculptor Giuseppe Obici. The inauguration was attended by Pius IX himself and the papal court, while the raising of the heavy column was entrusted to 220 firefighters, who positioned it in just over half an hour.

The Firefighters' Homage

The most evocative gesture of the day takes place at dawn. Since 1949, around 7:00 AM, the most senior firefighter on duty climbs the more than one hundred steps of the aerial ladder to a height of about 27 meters to place a wreath of flowers in the statue's arms. It is a tribute that recalls the decisive role of the firefighters in erecting the column in 1857 and officially opens the celebrations.

The Pope's Act of Veneration

In the afternoon comes the culminating moment: the Bishop of Rome reaches Piazza di Spagna for the traditional act of veneration, according to a custom consolidated during the twentieth century and never interrupted. Welcomed by the Mayor of Rome and the Cardinal Vicar, the Pontiff presents a basket of white roses and recites a prayer before the Madonna. In 2025, the homage was rendered for the first time by Pope Leo XIV, in the presence of tens of thousands of people.

An appointment for the whole city

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception marks the symbolic beginning of the Christmas season in Rome. Surrounding the ceremony, the Vatican Gendarmerie Band performs hymns to the Virgin, and masses are celebrated in nearby churches, such as the Trinitร  dei Monti which dominates the famous staircase. It is a free, open-air event capable of attracting Romans and visitors from all over Lazio to one of the most famous squares in Italy.

Homage to the Immaculate โ€” edition 2026

On December 8, 2026, the traditional Homage to the Immaculate Conception returns to Piazza di Spagna. At dawn, firefighters will climb the aerial ladder to place a floral tribute in the arms of the Madonna; in the afternoon, the traditional act of veneration by the Bishop of Rome at the Column of the Immaculate Conception is expected. The detailed program and times will be confirmed in the weeks leading up to the solemnity.

2026 Edition
