Petal carpets and floral displays in Piazza Garibaldi for Corpus Domini
The Belmonte Flower Festival is the floral celebration of Belmonte Mezzagno, a small town in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo, Sicily. For one day, Piazza Garibaldi, the heart of the town, is covered in petals, leaves, and seeds arranged to form large floral displays: an ancient tradition throughout Italy, linked to the Corpus Domini feast, which has found a recent yet deeply felt expression here within the community.
The event was born in 2025 from the initiative of the Pro Loco of Belmonte Mezzagno, led by president Giovanni Dragotto and his board, with the goal of promoting the town and its beauty through cultural initiatives that involve the entire community. As vice-president Maria Rita La Rocca stated, the festival aims to be "a sign of rebirth and participation for the whole community," as well as an opportunity to introduce Belmonte beyond its borders and transform this day into a tradition to be renewed every year.
The heart of the event lies in the floral displays created on the ground: compositions of petals and natural materials curated by the town's congregations and parish groups. In the first edition, ten large displays, each measuring about three meters, transformed the square into a mosaic of colors. The creation process involves volunteers of all ages in a collective effort that combines creativity, passion, and a spirit of sharing.
The festival takes place outdoors, is free to attend, and is linked to the religious calendar of Corpus Domini, with the involvement of the Mother Church and the local parish. More than just a tourist attraction, it is a celebration that the town builds for itself: an opportunity to gather in the square, admire the flower carpets, and experience a day of popular tradition together in the center of Belmonte Mezzagno.
The 2026 edition of the Belmonte Flower Festival took place on the weekend of June 6-7, 2026, in Piazza Garibaldi, Belmonte Mezzagno, in the Province of Palermo. Following the inaugural 2025 edition, the event promoted by the local Pro Loco returned as a key appointment linked to Corpus Domini, with the characteristic floral displays set up in the town's central square.
Once again, the heart of the event was the petal carpets handmade by volunteers, congregations, and parish groups, in a day of color and popular participation that confirmed the organizers' commitment to making the festival an annual tradition.
The large floral displays set up in Piazza Garibaldi, created by local parish groups and congregations, and the atmosphere of popular celebration linked to Corpus Domini.
Belmonte Mezzagno is located in the hinterland of the Province of Palermo, a short distance from the regional capital. It is easily reached by car from Palermo via the provincial road network; the festival takes place in Piazza Garibaldi, in the town center.
The event is free and takes place outdoors. We recommend arriving in the morning to admire the floral displays as they are completed.
