About Bell Tower Fire

At midnight, the bell tower of the Abbey of San Giacomo Apostolo ignites and the entire village holds its breath: the Bell Tower Fire is the heart of the Feast of Pope Saint Sylvester in Sant'Angelo a Scala, Irpinia, a town known as the "Land of the Two Popes." Two August evenings featuring a votive torchlight procession, a hike to the hermitage of San Silvestro, alleys brought to life by street performers and roaming musicians, food and wine stalls, and exhibitions, culminating in a pyromusical show that envelops the abbey.

The night the bell tower catches fire

There is a precise moment at midnight when everything in Sant'Angelo a Scala comes to a standstill. The village lights go out, the crowd gathers in Piazza San Giacomo Apostolo, and the abbey's bell tower lights up in a crescendo of fireworks that trace the tower's silhouette against the August sky. This is the Bell Tower Fire, a pyromusical spectacle that concludes the Feast of Pope Saint Sylvester and has attracted visitors from all over Campania to this small Irpinian town for years.

It is not just a simple fireworks finale: the pyrotechnic display is mounted across the entire structure of the Abbey of San Giacomo Apostolo, making the light appear to emerge from the building's very stone. The result is a brief, unforgettable scene that locals say is worth the trip all on its own.

The Land of the Two Popes

Sant'Angelo a Scala, with fewer than seven hundred inhabitants at an altitude of 582 meters in the Province of Avellino, is known in Irpinia as the "Land of the Two Popes." This refers to Pope Paul IV, born Gian Pietro Carafa, who was linked to this territory by birth and family, and Pope Saint Sylvester, whose devotion was deeply rooted among the local faithful by Paul IV himself, who dedicated two places of worship to him: the sanctuary on Mount Vallatrone and a chapel inside the Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, where the saint's relics are kept.

This dual legacy is the thread that binds the entire event together: not a manufactured festival, but a patronal feast that weaves together popular religion, historical memory, and community life in a village that doubles its population for two nights.

Environment and Christianity: the hike to the hermitage

The "Environment and Christianity" route traditionally opens the event in the afternoon. Starting from the town center, you walk along the CAI trail no. 205, the historic "Way of the Two Popes," climbing through the woods to the hermitage of San Silvestro at an altitude of about 925 meters. Here, you can visit the natural cave and the spring that pilgrims have considered miraculous for centuries, before attending Mass in the sanctuary.

Upon returning to the village, the torchlight procession of San Silvestro begins: the saint's relics are carried along the main street, amidst torches, until they return to the Abbey of San Giacomo. It is the most intimate moment of the festival and the perfect counterpoint to the roar of the following night.

Art and Flavors: the lively alleys of the historic center

As evening falls, the mood changes. The "Art and Flavors" route transforms the alleys, squares, and courtyards of the historic center into a sprawling stage: food and wine stalls featuring Irpinian products, craft workshops, traditional trades, photo exhibitions, contemporary art installations, creative recycling workshops, and circus activities for children.

Roaming through the alleys are troupes of street performers, bubble artists, medieval dancers, folk groups, and street bands, while acoustic concerts and folk music ensembles alternate in the main squares until late at night. The audience wanders, stops, and moves on: it is a festival to be experienced rather than just watched.

The land of Fiano

Sant'Angelo a Scala is located in the heart of the Fiano di Avellino production area, just a few kilometers from the villages of the Partenio and the Regional Park of the same name. Those arriving for the Bell Tower Fire will find a territory filled with wineries, chestnut forests, and hiking trails that are well worth exploring at a leisurely pace in the days surrounding the event.

Tips for the best experience

  • Arrive early: the village is small and parking spaces near the center fill up quickly in the late afternoon.
  • Bring hiking shoes if you want to participate in the climb to the hermitage along the CAI 205 trail.
  • The pyromusical finale is at midnight: it is best to plan your dinner at the stalls in the historic center.
  • Even in August, at an altitude of 582 meters, the evenings can be cool: a light sweater is useful.

Bell Tower Fire — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Bell Tower Fire has not yet been officially announced. The Feast of Pope Saint Sylvester traditionally takes place in mid-August in Sant'Angelo a Scala, featuring the votive torchlight procession, the "Environment and Christianity" and "Art and Flavors" routes in the historic center, and the pyromusical show on the bell tower of the Abbey of San Giacomo Apostolo at midnight. Dates and the program will be announced by the Municipality and the event's Facebook page.

At the moment, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Bell Tower Fire in Sant'Angelo a Scala, in the Province of Avellino. In previous years, the event has been held in the second decade of August, around the anniversary of Pope Saint Sylvester celebrated by the Irpinian community.

The structure of the festival is well-established: an afternoon dedicated to the climb to the hermitage of San Silvestro along the CAI 205 trail and Mass in the sanctuary, the torchlight procession with the saint's relics to the Abbey of San Giacomo, two evenings of alleys animated by food and wine stalls, crafts, exhibitions, street performers, and concerts, and the pyromusical finale that "sets fire" to the abbey's bell tower at midnight.

We recommend checking the dates and program on the official channels of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo a Scala and the Facebook page "Incendio Del Campanile S. Angelo A Scala" before traveling.
