The Epiphany celebration in the village of Serra Pistoiese, featuring house-to-house treats and festive magic
Some festivals don't need grand stages or famous names to be unforgettable: the Befana in Serra Pistoiese is one of them. Every January 5th, on the eve of the Epiphany, the village of Serra Pistoiese—a small hamlet in the municipality of Marliana, in the Pistoia Apennines—transforms into a vast open-air theater for the little ones. No tickets, no fences: just the houses, the narrow streets, and the warmth of a community that literally opens its doors.
The meeting point is at 10:00 AM in Piazza Trieste, the heart of the village. From there, children arriving from all over the province set off together for a merry tour of the houses: they knock on doors to collect sweets, fruit, and candies kindly prepared by the residents. It has been described, with a smile, as a sort of "Tuscan-style Halloween," but with the uniquely Italian warmth of the Epiphany. Hot chocolate and tea are always available to accompany the journey, perfect for braving the cold of the Pistoia Apennines, often dusted with snow at this time of year.
The festival has its roots in the 1960s. Back then, on the morning of the Epiphany, children would go from house to house, followed in the afternoon by the older youths; the latter would receive raw or cooked food, which they would then use to organize a big evening dinner and dance. From that popular village ritual, the event that still animates Serra Pistoiese today was born, keeping its spirit of sharing and community intact.
The Befana is also the perfect opportunity to discover Serra Pistoiese in its charming winter attire. The village streets are dotted with the decorations of 'Natale a Serra', festive ornaments spread throughout every corner of the town that make the walk even more evocative. It is a day designed for families, where the folk tradition of the Tuscan Apennines intertwines with the magic of the holidays.
The Befana in Serra Pistoiese is one of those small, great village festivals that make lesser-known Tuscany a treasure trove of living traditions: a simple, genuine event deeply connected to its community.
For the 2026 Epiphany, the Befana in Serra Pistoiese returned to make the village of Marliana shine. The appointment was set for Monday, January 5th, with a meeting at 10:00 AM in Piazza Trieste.
Children, including those from outside the village, set off together for the traditional tour of the houses: knocking from door to door, they collected sweets, fruit, and candies carefully prepared by the residents, accompanied by hot chocolate and tea. The village streets, decorated for 'Natale a Serra', provided the backdrop for a day of celebration for all families.
