A barefoot penitential march from Avellino to Portella in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Every year on July 16th, the town of Monteforte Irpino, in the province of Avellino, experiences its most defining day. Hundreds of faithful renew an ancient vow with a penitential march in honor of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel: this is the Battenti Festival, one of the most deeply felt and recognizable religious events in all of Irpinia and Campania. It is not a spectacle, but a popular ritual that involves entire families and draws thousands of spectators to the roadside.
The roots of the cult are ancient: as early as 1630, during an apostolic visit documented in the Vatican archives, a confraternity of battenti (penitents) "dressed in sackcloth" was recorded at the church of San Martino in Monteforte. The event in its current form, however, was born in 1938, when a group of young men from Monteforte—including Francesco della Bella and Modestino Ercolino—were moved by the penitential pilgrimages of the Battenti of Santa Filomena in Mugnano and decided to create a faith-based procession in their own town. The first march set off barefoot from the Cathedral of Avellino to reach the Carmine church, where the parish priest celebrated Mass. The tradition has continued uninterrupted ever since.
The battenti wear a simple and highly recognizable uniform: white shirt and trousers, a red sash tied at the waist, and strictly bare feet. After the Mass celebrated at dawn, they reach Avellino and from there, arranged in two rows, they face nearly ten kilometers of the Via Nazionale on the already scorching asphalt of mid-July.
The march on July 16th is the culmination of a longer journey. From July 7th, the church of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, in the Portella area, hosts the novena, with Holy Masses and the recitation of the Rosary every day. The evening of July 15th is dedicated to confessions and the registration of the battenti, who prepare for the following day's departure. The day of the 16th closes in the evening with the procession of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel through the streets of the town.
The finish line is the church of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, in the ancient village of Portella, whose origins date back to the 13th century and which houses a valuable wooden choir, a beautiful pulpit, and an 18th-century organ. The church is managed by the Archconfraternity dedicated to the cult of the Virgin, which brings together the members and organizes the event every year. The arrival of the battenti, around mid-morning, is welcomed by the crowd and followed by Holy Mass.
For those who participate, the march is the fulfillment of a vow, a request for grace, or a thanksgiving for a prayer answered: the physical sacrifice becomes the most concrete way to express faith. In recent years, the participation of young people and children has grown, often welcomed in the final stretch of the route, a sign of a family transmission that keeps the tradition alive. The Battenti Festival of Monteforte Irpino thus remains one of the most authentic testimonies of popular devotion in Irpinia, an intangible heritage that the Municipality and the Campania Region recognize among their defining rituals.
The 2026 Battenti Festival in Monteforte Irpino took place on Thursday, July 16, on the day of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, at the end of the novena that began on July 7 at the Portella church.
The day began well before dawn: at 5:30 AM, the gathering of the battenti in front of the church of the B.V. del Carmine, at 5:45 AM the Holy Mass dedicated to them, at 6:15 AM the ritual photos and departure towards Avellino. From Via Macchia in Avellino, at 8:00 AM, the actual march began: two rows of faithful in white shirts and trousers, red sashes at the waist, and bare feet, along the nearly ten kilometers of the Via Nazionale, marked by the sound of the team leader's trumpet.
After the usual stop at Alvanella, the battenti arrived at Portella in the late morning, many walking the last few meters in front of the church on their knees and laying flowers entrusted to them by family and friends at the feet of the statue. At 11:00 AM, the arrival Holy Mass; at 7:00 PM, the procession of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel closed the day of celebration.
Monteforte Irpino is located a few kilometers from Avellino, along the Via Nazionale. By car, it can be reached from the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (Avellino Ovest exit) or from the Avellino-Salerno motorway junction. The reference railway station is Avellino, connected to the town by bus lines. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino, about 50 km away.
The route winds along the Via Nazionale between Avellino and the Portella area of Monteforte Irpino: it is possible to witness the passage of the battenti along the entire road. The arrival in front of the church of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, in the Portella area, is the most crowded and evocative moment.
The march takes place during the central hours of the morning in mid-July, with high temperatures: bring water, a hat, and sunscreen. As this is a religious ritual, a respectful attitude is required, especially during moments of prayer and near the church. Participation and access are free and open to all.
