The heart of the Sicilian Carnival, featuring floats, masquerade groups, and the ancient Pignatuna tradition
The Barrafranca Carnival is the most cherished popular festival in Barrafranca, a town in the so-called "Sicilian center" within the province of Enna, in the heart of inland Sicily. Organized by the municipal administration through the Department of Tourism, Entertainment, and Culture, the Carnival transforms the historic center for several days into a whirlwind of color, music, and choreography, with masquerade groups serving as the absolute stars of the parades along the town's streets.
The highlight is the grand Shrove Tuesday parade: masquerade groups, each with their own theme and elaborate costumes, travel along the main streets—from Viale Generale Cannada along Corso Italia to Viale della Repubblica—stopping to perform their routines before the jury. At the end of the route, a committee awards prizes to the most deserving groups during a festive evening that involves the entire Barrafranca community. Alongside the main parade, a dedicated procession for school masquerade groups of all ages brings hundreds of children and teenagers in costume to the streets.
What truly makes the Barrafranca Carnival unique is the survival of an ancient tradition: The Pignatuna, or the recitation of the twelve months of the year. The name comes from the local dialect word "pignata" (pot): a clay container, hung between two houses and filled with confetti and sweets, is broken by twelve horsemen representing the twelve months, led by a King and a Queen. Dressed in grand attire, they recite a "contrasto" (dialogue) in rhyming hendecasyllables, in a traveling performance of Iberian origin that arrived in Sicily during the Spanish rule. The tradition, which was interrupted in the mid-20th century, was brought back to life in 1966 thanks to the efforts of Professor Filippo Giuseppe Centonze, who recovered and transcribed the recitative parts that had previously been passed down only orally.
Between floats, confetti, masquerade dance parties, and the evocative breaking of the Pignatuna, the Barrafranca Carnival is much more than just a parade: it is a living narrative of Barrafranca's identity and a rural Sicily that still celebrates the passing of the seasons and the hope for a good harvest today. An unmissable event for those who want to discover the authentic folklore of the Enna hinterland.
The 2026 Barrafranca Carnival was approved by the municipal administration of Barrafranca with Council Resolution no. 4 of January 15, 2026, under the leadership of Mayor Giuseppe Lo Monaco and the Councilor for Tourism, Entertainment, and Culture, Claudia Ingala. The heart of the festival was the Shrove Tuesday parade on February 17, with six masquerade groups enlivening the town streets with costumes and choreography, concluding with the awards ceremony for the most deserving groups. On February 20, it was the turn of the parade featuring Barrafranca's school masquerade groups of all levels.
