Masks, parades, and Atellano traditions in Piazza Principessa di Belmonte

The Atellano Carnival is the historic carnival celebration of the Atellana area, located in the northern part of the province of Caserta, in Campania. Born and raised in Sant'Arpino, the Carnival expanded its reach starting with its 15th edition in 2025, involving the municipalities of Orta di Atella and Succivo for the first time, uniting these towns that share a common Atellano heritage under a single festival.
In Orta di Atella, the hub of the festivities is Piazza Principessa di Belmonte: here, during the peak days, the square hosts entertainment, music, and shows, while the town center streets welcome the grand masked parade that connects the three municipalities. It is a street carnival, free of charge and designed primarily for families, which transforms the squares into a shared space of celebration.
The Carnival of the Terra Atellana is more than just a popular festival: it directly evokes the Fabulae Atellanae, the ancient masked farces that originated in the ancient city of Atella and are considered among the earliest forms of theater on the Italian peninsula. Masks such as Maccus, Bucco, Pappus, and Dossennus belong to this heritage and are brought to life during the event, giving the festival a cultural and anthropological significance beyond mere entertainment. For the three Atellano municipalities, the Carnival is a way to reconnect with a shared historical identity, often referred to in local chronicles as the "homeland of the fabulae."
The event is managed by the Comitato Carnevale Atellano, named after Virginio Guida, its founder and president for nearly twenty years, and currently led by Elpidio D'Elia. The committee works in collaboration with the three municipal administrations, local schools, and numerous local associations. The 2024 edition was not held due to a leadership transition within the committee, but in 2025, the festival returned in a significantly expanded format, covering all three towns.
The most anticipated moment is the conclusion on Shrove Tuesday: the second parade sets off in the afternoon and converges on the former Atella Town Hall, where the party continues into the evening with live musical performances, the awards ceremony for the mask contest, and tastings of local gastronomy. In the 2025 edition, the finale featured the 'Suoni e Passione' bottari and the band 'Vianova', accompanied by a special philatelic cancellation dedicated to the Atellano Carnival.
Visitors to Orta di Atella during the Carnival will find an authentic celebration, deeply felt by the locals and free from commercial tourist trappings: confetti, floats, and masks blend seamlessly into the daily life of the town. It is also an excellent opportunity to discover a part of Campania rarely visited by traditional tourist circuits but rich in history, located just a few kilometers from Aversa and the archaeological site of ancient Atella. Dates vary each year according to the liturgical calendar, typically falling between February and March, with the peak during the days of Carnival.
As of our latest check, there are no public announcements, posters, or local press articles documenting a 16th edition of the Atellano Carnival in 2026 in Orta di Atella (province of Caserta, Campania). Media outlets that usually cover the event have not published the customary January presentation or the parade schedule.
It should be noted that the event has previously experienced a suspension: the 2024 edition was not held during the leadership change of the Committee, before the grand return in 2025 with the expansion to three municipalities. In the absence of sources, therefore, the 2026 edition remains to be verified.
The period indicated in this entry corresponds to the 2026 Carnival season, which culminated on Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026. For updated information, it is advisable to follow the channels of the 'Virginio Guida' Atellano Carnival Committee and the communications from the municipalities of Orta di Atella, Sant'Arpino, and Succivo.
