An artistic tasting experience blending archaeology and local flavors in Montescudaio
ArcheoGusto - An artistic tasting is the event series hosted by the Municipality of Montescudaio, in the province of Pisa, in collaboration with CeDiAS, the town's Documentation Center for Archaeology and History. The concept is simple yet captivating: to intertwine the region's historical memory with its food and wine excellence, in a format that combines scholarly insight with sensory delight. Each meeting takes place in the charming medieval village of Montescudaio, overlooking the hills of the Val di Cecina, amidst Tuscan wine country and stunning landscapes.
The ArcheoGusto formula is divided into two complementary moments. It begins with an archaeological conversation led by scholars from CeDiAS: in the edition dedicated to honey, director Monica Baldassarri guides the audience through a talk titled Honey between art, history, and archaeology, a journey through time to discover how this precious food has accompanied human evolution, documented by artifacts and artistic evidence.
The second part is dedicated to local flavors with a guided tasting of local honey and cheeses, curated by area producers such as Le Chicche di Giada and I Formaggi di Augusto. The initiative also benefits from the support of entities like microstoria and the asproM association, the Association of Montescudaio Producers.
ArcheoGusto stems from the activities of CeDiAS, inaugurated at the end of 2025 in the spaces adjacent to the Civic Tower of Montescudaio. More than just a museum, the center is a true "palace of memory": a living space dedicated to communicating and promoting local culture, housing prehistoric, Etruscan, and Roman artifacts from the Lower Val di Cecina, as well as evidence from the Middle Ages and the modern era linked to the Abbey of Santa Maria. It is precisely from this heritage that the dialogue between archaeology and gastronomy, which brings the series to life, begins.
An ancient medieval and Renaissance castle, Montescudaio is today a village in the province of Pisa known for its wines and a landscape that tells centuries of history. ArcheoGusto is the ideal opportunity to experience the village in a different way, letting yourself be guided through artifacts and stories, and then savoring the products born from these very Tuscan hills.
The first event of ArcheoGusto 2026 takes place on Saturday, May 2, at 5:30 PM at the Sala del Poggiarello in Montescudaio. The protagonist is honey, discussed by the director of CeDiAS, Monica Baldassarri, in the meeting Honey between art, history, and archaeology, followed by a guided tasting of local honey and cheeses. The series continues in the following months: a new ArcheoGusto is scheduled for June 27 at 6:30 PM at the Terrazza del Poggiarello.
With the support of microstoria and the asproM association (Association of Montescudaio Producers).
ArcheoGusto events are held in Montescudaio (PI), in the province of Pisa, at the Sala del Poggiarello and, during the summer months, on the Terrazza del Poggiarello, in the village's historic center.
By car: Montescudaio can be reached from the SS1 Aurelia road by taking the exit towards Cecina, then following the provincial roads towards the hills of the Val di Cecina. By train: the nearest station is Cecina, on the Tirrenica line, from which you can continue by car or local connections.
