About Appia Food Festival

The Appia Food Festival is the food and wine event accompanying the Feast of Mary Help of Christians at the Salesian Oratory in Brindisi, located on the historic Appian Way. Every May, the Salesian courtyard comes alive with a journey through Apulian flavors—from the traditional Porchetta Festival to pettole, dairy products, and craft beer—intertwined with Marian religious rites, live music, and the festive atmosphere that unites the entire local community.

A meeting of faith and flavor in Brindisi

The Appia Food Festival, which accompanies the Feast of Mary Help of Christians, is one of the most cherished spring events in Brindisi, Puglia. Held at the Salesian Oratory on the Appian Way, the beating heart of the neighborhood's youth and parish life, the event has always blended two souls: the religious, tied to the Marian devotion dear to the Salesian tradition, and the convivial, featuring a culinary trail that brings the best of the Brindisi and Apulian territory to the table.

Ninety years of Salesian presence

The festival has roots dating back to the 1930s and has evolved over the decades, innovating while keeping traditional religious rites intact. The Salesian community of Brindisi, celebrating its long history in the city, preserves a heritage of memory and popular participation through this event: photo exhibitions, moments of prayer, the triduum in honor of Mary Help of Christians, and the solemn procession through the parish streets mark the event's calendar.

The culinary trail

The delicious heart of the event is the Appia Food Festival, a food and wine trail featuring typical products from the Brindisi and Apulian area. A must-visit is the Porchetta Festival, accompanied by specialties and stalls managed by local producers. Offerings include:

  • porchetta, pettole, and traditional fried foods;
  • mozzarella, dairy products, and cheeses from Apulian dairies;
  • Apulian craft beer and local wines;
  • zero-kilometer, organic, and PGI products.

Over the years, local culinary names such as Birra Gruit, Agricola Liberace, WineAut, Tenute Luspada, La Boutique dei Legumi, Caseificio Isabella, and Dolciumi Fanigliulo have enlivened the stalls, creating an authentic showcase of the flavors of the Brindisi province.

Music, youth, and entertainment

Alongside the dining, the festival offers evenings of live music and entertainment. A highlight is the Appia Music Festival, a singing competition dedicated to young Apulian artists, followed by DJ sets featuring Italian music and 70s, 80s, and 90s disco. The event traditionally closes with a fireworks display, in a festive atmosphere that engages families, young people, and visitors.

An event for the whole city

Organized by the Salesians of Brindisi through the Youth Center Oratory, the Appia Food Festival is an opportunity to rediscover the community spirit of the Municipality of Brindisi: a meeting of devotion, popular tradition, and fine cuisine that dresses the Appian Way in festive colors every year and attracts numerous visitors to the Salesian courtyard.
