About Antichi Sapori Tammaresi

Every summer, San Tammaro, a small town in the province of Caserta, rediscovers its heritage recipes with the Antichi Sapori Tammaresi Festival. Along Via Domenico Bovienzo, food stalls run by the volunteers of the Associazione Accollatori Maria SS. della Libera e San Tammaro serve fresh gnocchi with sausage ragù, pasta and beans, sandwiches, and fried treats, all paired with local wine. Two evenings of live music and dancing transform the street into a grand village celebration, held under the patronage of the Municipality.

A village celebration in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro

The Antichi Sapori Tammaresi Festival is one of the most anticipated summer events in San Tammaro, a town of just under six thousand residents in the province of Caserta, Campania. For two consecutive evenings, usually spanning the end of June and the beginning of July, Via Domenico Bovienzo is closed to traffic and filled with communal tables, stalls, and festive lighting: it is the celebration where the local community gathers around its culinary roots.

The name says it all: antichi sapori (ancient flavors), referring to the dishes once prepared in the farmhouses of the Terra di Lavoro, recreated without shortcuts by those who learned these recipes from their families. This is not an event manufactured for mass tourism, but an authentic village festival where those cooking and serving are the same volunteers who animate the town's social life throughout the year.

What to eat

The menu remains faithful to the Caserta tradition and changes little from year to year. In past editions, the stalls have offered:

  • fresh pasta gnocchi with sausage ragù, the festival's signature dish;
  • pasta and beans, prepared according to home-style recipes;
  • stuffed sandwiches and French fries, for those who prefer to eat on the go;
  • traditional desserts and local wine to round off the evening.

Portions are purchased directly at the stalls with tickets or at the cashier, following the classic formula of Campanian festivals: you order, pick up your food, and sit at the communal tables set up along the street. It is the best way to sample multiple dishes in one meal and strike up a conversation with your neighbors.

Live music and dancing

Both evenings are accompanied by live music and dancing: local bands and groups take turns on the street stage, with a repertoire ranging from Campanian folk music to dance hits that get even the most reluctant guests on their feet. The atmosphere is typical of Southern village festivals, with families staying late into the night and children playing between the tables.

Who organizes it

The festival is promoted by the Associazione Accollatori Maria SS. della Libera e San Tammaro, the association that carries the statues on their shoulders during patronal celebrations and serves as a key driver of local community life. The event is held under the patronage of the Municipality of San Tammaro, and the proceeds support the association's activities and the town's religious festivals, most notably that of Maria Santissima della Libera with its famous 'Flight of the Angel'.

San Tammaro and the Real Sito di Carditello

Visitors from out of town can combine the festival with a major cultural stop: in the municipal district, in the Carditello hamlet, stands the Real Sito di Carditello, the ancient Bourbon estate dedicated to breeding and agriculture, now returned to the public after an extensive restoration. San Tammaro is located about nine kilometers from Caserta and its Royal Palace, and about thirty kilometers from Naples, in a plain that was for centuries the granary of the Kingdom.

When to go

The usual period is the last weekend of June or the first of July, with stalls opening in the early evening and closing around midnight. Dates vary from year to year: it is always advisable to check the final program on the organizing association's social media channels or the Municipality's notices in the weeks leading up to the event.

Antichi Sapori Tammaresi — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Antichi Sapori Tammaresi Festival does not yet have official confirmed dates. Calendars for Campanian festivals place it in the usual period between late June and early July along Via Domenico Bovienzo in San Tammaro, but this is an estimate based on previous editions. To find out the final dates, it is best to follow the channels of the Associazione Accollatori Maria SS. della Libera e San Tammaro and the notices from the Municipality of San Tammaro.

At the moment, the 2026 Antichi Sapori Tammaresi Festival has not been announced with official dates. Sources tracking the festival calendar in the province of Caserta indicate the usual period of late June or early July, but explicitly note that this is a presumed period based on past editions.

If the event follows its usual format, it will return to Via Domenico Bovienzo in the center of San Tammaro, with traditional Caserta cuisine stalls opening in the early evening and two nights accompanied by live music and dancing. The organization is handled by the Associazione Accollatori Maria SS. della Libera e San Tammaro, with the patronage of the Municipality.

This page will be updated as soon as the association publishes the final program for the 2026 edition.
