The historic Canavese Carnival featuring the Tuchinaggio re-enactment, the Bela Pignatera, and the burning of King Pignatun
The Ancient Carnival of Castellamonte is one of the most deeply rooted traditions in the Canavese region and all of Piedmont. Every year, for about three weeks, the town of Castellamonte, in the province of Turin, transforms into a vast open-air stage where history, rituals, and popular tradition merge into a collective re-enactment that involves the entire community. This is not merely a carnival, but a true historical re-enactment of the Tuchinaggio, the medieval revolt that shaped the local territory.
The origins date back to 1386, when the people of Castellamonte rebelled against the tyrannical Count Uguccione, demanding personal freedom, tax relief, and municipal autonomy. The revolt culminated in the storming of the castle, which was set on fire. The Countess Isabella di Montebello, beloved by the people for her generosity, escaped through a secret passage toward the Crus del Ciàp and helped reconcile the nobility and the commoners. From this figure, the character of the Bela Pignatera was born, the symbol of the carnival, accompanied by the First Consul Bernardo Gaio.
Every year, citizens of Castellamonte take on the roles of historical figures. The lead roles are played by the Bela Pignatera and the First Consul, accompanied by ladies-in-waiting, terzieri (district representatives), and the Clavario. The comic character of King Pignatun, a caricature of a local figure, is finally condemned and burned at the stake to close the festivities, a ritual repeated for generations.
The program features numerous events: the presentation of the masks, the investiture of the Bela Pignatera and the First Consul with a historical ceremony in the square, the Children's Carnival, and the grand Allegorical Parade with colorful floats and historical walking groups. The event concludes with the burning of King Pignatun and a closing dinner enlivened by music and an orchestra.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Castellamonte together with the Supreme Order of the Bela Pignatera and Consuls, the Historic Carnival in its current form began in 1952. Today, it represents a defining event for Castellamonte and the entire Canavese, attracting visitors from across the province of Turin and Piedmont with its blend of folklore, traditional gastronomy, and historical memory.
Castellamonte is located in the Upper Canavese area, in the province of Turin. By car: from Turin via the SP460 del Gran Paradiso (approx. 40 km). By train: Castellamonte railway station on the Canavesana line, or via the stations of Rivarolo Canavese and Ivrea with a connecting bus.
Most events in the square and the processions are free and open to the public. For the closing dinner and events requiring reservations, please contact the Pro Loco of Castellamonte or consult the official channels of the Supreme Order of the Bela Pignatera.
