The patronal feast in the only municipality in Italy dedicated to Saint Francis
The Patronal Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, rebranded in recent years as SanFra in Festa, is the most anticipated event of the year for San Francesco al Campo, a small town in the province of Turin, Piedmont, and the only one in Italy to bear the name of the 'Poverello' of Assisi. The festival traditionally takes place around October 4th, the feast day of Saint Francis, spanning a long weekend between late September and early October.
The secular heart of the event is the Palio dei Borghi, which pits representatives from the town's various districts against each other in challenges that are as fun-loving as they are competitive. Among the most popular events are tug-of-war, equestrian races, hay bale racing, and the curious 'pasta-eating' competition. It is a way to strengthen local identity and involve both young and old in a spirit of healthy rivalry.
The program alternates between games for all ages, dance evenings, live music, and book presentations. There is also a funfair, and in recent years, cycling events linked to the nearby Francone Velodrome have also been featured. A tradition particularly dear to the area is the showdown of the Reines of the Valli di Lanzo, a tournament of historic fighting cows of the Aosta Valley breed that attracts enthusiasts and curious onlookers alike.
The festival is also a culinary occasion: every evening features a different specialty, with lunches and dinners prepared by Pro Loco volunteers. However, the spiritual heart remains the religious dimension, with the procession and solemn mass in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the highlight of Sunday.
The event is organized by the Municipality of San Francesco al Campo in collaboration with the Pro Loco. Admission to the festival grounds is free; some dining activities require payment. The detailed program is published every year in an official flyer in the days leading up to the event.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi in San Francesco al Campo (Turin) takes place in a symbolic year: 2026 marks the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis, celebrated across Italy. The festival is confirmed for early October, with Saturday, October 3rd, already announced as a day of events dedicated to the patron saint.
As per tradition, the Palio dei Borghi, dance evenings, Pro Loco gastronomy, the funfair, and religious moments with a procession and solemn mass are expected. The detailed program with times and appointments will be published by the Municipality and the Pro Loco in the days leading up to the event.
