The nativity comes to life within the historic cellars of the Borgo dei Sutè
Every December, the historic center of San Damiano d'Asti, in the Province of Asti, transforms into a grand living nativity scene that draws thousands of visitors from across Piedmont and beyond. The re-enactment winds partly along the streets and squares of the town and partly inside the atmospheric historic cellars and underground passages, offering a unique and intimate atmosphere that few other living nativity scenes can match.
The route comes to life in the ancient Borgo dei Sutè, where visitors are guided through dozens of settings that reconstruct the nativity and daily life in the time of Bethlehem. Hundreds of costumed performers portray washerwomen, carpenters, cobblers, woodcarvers, bakers, blacksmiths, fishermen, innkeepers, merchants, and dancers, while the sounds of bagpipes and lighting effects simulating the transition from dawn to night accompany the journey.
Along the route, there is no shortage of moments dedicated to ancient trades: you can witness the minting of coins, the drafting of the census parchment, and demonstrations by artisans at work. The church's underground areas and the town's cellars serve as a backdrop for theatrical performances and living tableaux that recount the anticipation and the birth.
The living nativity of San Damiano is part of the 'Il Magico Paese di Natale' circuit, the major Christmas event connecting Asti, Govone, Santo Stefano Belbo, and San Damiano d'Asti, which has been awarded as one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. On opening days, a free shuttle service connects Asti to San Damiano, making the event easily accessible even for those visiting other stops on the circuit.
Access to the living nativity is open and free, with no reservation or ticket required: a choice that confirms the popular and community-driven spirit of this re-enactment, which is the result of the work of many local volunteers. Amidst the illuminated alleys, Christmas markets, and the scents of Monferrato specialties, San Damiano d'Asti becomes one of the most magical destinations of the Piedmontese Christmas for a few days.
