About Altino Carnival

The Altino Carnival brings color, costumes, and cheer to the narrow streets of this small fortified village in the province of Chieti, Abruzzo. This local community festival, organized by the Pro Loco, is part of the extensive calendar of Abruzzese carnivals promoted by regional associations. With confetti, costumes, traditional fried pastries, and the festive spirit of a community gathering in the square, it is the February event that brings locals and visitors of all ages out into the streets in the heart of the Sangro-Aventino area.

The Carnival in the village of Altino

The Altino Carnival is the popular festival that brings the small town of Altino to life every February. Located in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo, the village is perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Aventino Valley toward the Adriatic coast. Altino retains the appearance of a typical fortified village, and it is within these narrow streets, small squares, and historic churches that the Carnival finds its natural setting.

A community celebration

As is the case in most Abruzzese towns, the Altino Carnival is first and foremost a community celebration: an occasion for children, families, and local associations to gather in the streets and share a day of joy. Colorful masks, confetti, and streamers transform the historic center into a small open-air theater, where folk traditions are passed down from generation to generation.

The Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo

The Altino event is part of the vast calendar of Abruzzese carnivals, which every year sees dozens of municipalities in the region celebrating thanks to the work of local Pro Loco associations. Throughout the region, February is filled with parades, street parties, and social gatherings that showcase a living cultural heritage made of colors, sounds, and flavors. In Altino, the torch of this tradition is carried by the Pro Loco, which manages the organization of the festivities for the town.

Carnival flavors

The Abruzzese Carnival is not just about masks and music, but also gastronomy: during the festive days, there is no shortage of traditional fried pastries, from fritters to typical sweets, prepared and shared according to local peasant customs. Altino, after all, is a town with a strong gastronomic identity, famous above all for the Peperone Dolce di Altino (Sweet Pepper of Altino), a symbolic product of the territory to which a museum in the historic center is also dedicated.

A village to discover

Participating in the Altino Carnival is also an opportunity to discover an authentic corner of the Sangro-Aventino: a medieval village surrounded by the landscapes of the Lake Serranella Nature Reserve and overlooking a valley that descends toward the Adriatic. It is an ideal destination for those seeking the most genuine and rustic side of the Abruzzese Carnival, far from the large crowds.

Altino Carnival — edition 2026

For 2026, the Altino Carnival is scheduled for February 15th, as part of the Abruzzese carnival calendar. A local village festival with masks and cheer in the Chieti area, organized by the local Pro Loco.

The 2026 edition of the Altino Carnival is scheduled for February 15, 2026, as part of the Abruzzo carnival calendar. As usual, the festivities take place in the historic center of the village, featuring masks, confetti, and the joyful atmosphere of traditional Abruzzese folk culture.
