The Carnival in the village of Altino

The Altino Carnival is the popular festival that brings the small town of Altino to life every February. Located in the province of Chieti, in the heart of Abruzzo, the village is perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Aventino Valley toward the Adriatic coast. Altino retains the appearance of a typical fortified village, and it is within these narrow streets, small squares, and historic churches that the Carnival finds its natural setting.

The Abruzzese Carnival is not just about masks and music, but also gastronomy: during the festive days, there is no shortage of traditional fried pastries, from fritters to typical sweets, prepared and shared according to local peasant customs. Altino, after all, is a town with a strong gastronomic identity, famous above all for the Peperone Dolce di Altino (Sweet Pepper of Altino), a symbolic product of the territory to which a museum in the historic center is also dedicated.
