The living nativity scene in the alleys of the village of Villalfonsina
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the Abruzzo winter, the village of Villalfonsina, a small town in the province of Chieti overlooking the hills of the Middle Vasto area, celebrates one of the region's most heartfelt Christmas traditions: the "Villalfonsina in the Nativity" living nativity scene. Marking its twenty-fifth edition in 2024-2025, the event is organized by the Amici del Presepe Association and involves dozens of local residents every year.
The sacred performance comes to life in the alleys of the historic center, where ancient stone houses and narrow passages provide a natural backdrop for the nativity scene. Along the route, visitors encounter the characters of the nativity—the Holy Family, shepherds, the Three Wise Men, and figures representing ancient trades—in an atmosphere that recreates the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. The performance is traditionally held on December 26th (St. Stephen's Day) and January 6th (Epiphany), during the evening, when soft lighting makes the walk through the alleys even more evocative.
Accompanying the living nativity is the nativity exhibition, set up in the council chamber of the Villalfonsina Town Hall. The exhibition, which can be visited during the performance days, features artistic and handcrafted nativity scenes made with various materials and techniques, offering a moment of reflection and discovery of the nativity tradition.
In Abruzzo, the living nativity is a deeply rooted and widespread event, capable of attracting millions of visitors across the entire region during the holidays. The Villalfonsina event is part of this network of choral Christmas celebrations, while maintaining the intimate, community feel of a small village, where the entire town participates in preparing the scenery and dressing the actors. It is an event designed for families, free and open to all, which combines faith, collective memory, and the enhancement of the historic center.
Admission to the performances and the exhibition is free. Villalfonsina is easily reached from the Adriatic coast and nearby towns in the Upper and Middle Vasto area. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: it is recommended to check the channels of the Amici del Presepe Association and the Municipality of Villalfonsina as the holidays approach.
The 2026 edition of the Villalfonsina living nativity has not yet been officially scheduled. Based on previous editions, the nativity performance in the alleys of the historic center and the nativity exhibition in the town hall are expected during the usual period between Christmas and Epiphany.
