The Carnival festival of the Municipality of Alpignano, featuring historical masks, parades, and entertainment in the square.
The Alpignano Carnival is one of the most cherished events of the winter season in the Municipality of Alpignano, in the Province of Turin, in the heart of the western belt of the Piedmontese capital. Promoted by the Pro Loco Alpignano in collaboration with the municipal administration, the event transforms the streets and squares of the town into a large festive space, filled with colors, confetti, and masks, involving local associations, schools, and citizens of all ages.
The heart of the Alpignano carnival tradition lies in the official masks Monsù Còssot and Madama Cossotera, figures who embody the popular spirit and identity of the community. Every year, the investiture ceremony marks the official start of the festivities: the Mayor symbolically hands over the keys to the city to the masks, who in the following weeks visit schools and social centers to bring the joy of Carnival to the youngest and the elderly.
The highlight is the Grand Carnival, which takes place in Piazza Unità d'Italia, transformed for the occasion into a large open-air playground. The square is divided into various themed areas dedicated to games, creative workshops, theatrical activities, and traditional games, inspired by the history of the Italian Carnival and its most representative masks. There are also prizes for the most beautiful mask and the group with the most original choreography.
The Alpignano Carnival is part of the rich network of historical carnivals in Piedmont, with moments of twinning and exchange between the masks of numerous municipalities in the region and the nearby Aosta Valley. It is an opportunity to rediscover the sense of belonging and local folkloric tradition in a festive atmosphere that unites different generations. The event, with free admission, is a reference point for local families looking for a day of fun and conviviality.
