About Summer Cotechino Festival

Between late August and the first days of September, the hamlet of Alberone di Cento (FE) celebrates its most beloved product with the summer edition of the Cotechino Festival. Over two weekends, the covered stand at the Alberonese Sports Centre offers the typical Alberone cotechino with mashed potatoes, salamina da sugo, and traditional first courses of the Po Valley, while the church square comes alive with musical evenings, craft markets, exhibitions, and, to close, an eagerly awaited fireworks display. A popular festival linked to the Feast of the Blessed Virgin of the Willow.

The summer edition of a century-old festival

The Alberone Cotechino Festival is one of the most deeply rooted food and wine festivals in the Bassa Ferrarese and takes place in the hamlet of Alberone, in the Municipality of Cento, in the province of Ferrara (Emilia-Romagna). Alongside the famous winter edition in February, there is this summer edition which falls between late August and early September, spread over two weekends. An event that has surpassed its 120th edition and continues to attract gourmets from all over Emilia and the nearby plains of Modena.

Alberone's cotechino and its record

Alberone has entered gastronomic legend for producing the world's largest cotechino, an specimen over 137 meters long that earned it a Guinness World Record. Cotechino, according to tradition, was born in Mirandola in 1515 during the siege of Pope Julius II, and here it is prepared and served following recipes passed down through generations. It is the dish around which the entire festival revolves.

Dining under the stand

The heart of the festival is the covered gastronomic stand at the Alberonese Sports Centre, on Via Rossini, opening in the evening at 7:00 PM. The menu is a journey into Emilian cuisine:

  • First courses: the house trio with truffle tortellini, festival garganelli, and pumpkin tortelloni with ragรน, as well as cotechino lasagna
  • Main courses: the typical Alberone cotechino with mashed potatoes (served in various portions, from baby to full), salamina da sugo, mixed grill, truffle scaloppine, beef tagliata, and roast guinea fowl
  • Side dishes: mashed potatoes, salad, French fries, and grilled vegetables
  • Desserts: profiteroles, mascarpone, tiramisu, dolce salame, zuppa inglese, nougat semifreddo, and lemon or coffee sorbet

Music, markets, and fireworks

The summer edition is not just about gastronomy: the evenings are accompanied by musical performances in the square, craft markets, exhibitions, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display. The event is indeed linked to the Feast of the Blessed Virgin of the Willow, which intertwines the religious and popular dimension with the convivial aspect of dining.

A village festival in the Ferrara plains

More than just a simple festival, Alberone's event is an identity-building appointment for the community of Cento and the entire Ferrara plain: an occasion where local cuisine becomes a story and a moment of encounter, on warm late summer evenings.
