The great late-summer cotechino festival in Alberone di Cento
The Alberone Cotechino Festival is one of the most deeply rooted food and wine festivals in the Bassa Ferrarese and takes place in the hamlet of Alberone, in the Municipality of Cento, in the province of Ferrara (Emilia-Romagna). Alongside the famous winter edition in February, there is this summer edition which falls between late August and early September, spread over two weekends. An event that has surpassed its 120th edition and continues to attract gourmets from all over Emilia and the nearby plains of Modena.
Alberone has entered gastronomic legend for producing the world's largest cotechino, an specimen over 137 meters long that earned it a Guinness World Record. Cotechino, according to tradition, was born in Mirandola in 1515 during the siege of Pope Julius II, and here it is prepared and served following recipes passed down through generations. It is the dish around which the entire festival revolves.
The heart of the festival is the covered gastronomic stand at the Alberonese Sports Centre, on Via Rossini, opening in the evening at 7:00 PM. The menu is a journey into Emilian cuisine:
The summer edition is not just about gastronomy: the evenings are accompanied by musical performances in the square, craft markets, exhibitions, and, as a grand finale, a fireworks display. The event is indeed linked to the Feast of the Blessed Virgin of the Willow, which intertwines the religious and popular dimension with the convivial aspect of dining.
More than just a simple festival, Alberone's event is an identity-building appointment for the community of Cento and the entire Ferrara plain: an occasion where local cuisine becomes a story and a moment of encounter, on warm late summer evenings.
The 2026 summer edition of the Alberone Cotechino Festival takes place on August 27-28-29-30 and September 3-4-5-6, at the Alberonese Sports Centre on Via Rossini, in Alberone di Cento (FE). The covered gastronomic stand opens every evening at 7:00 PM, featuring the typical Alberone cotechino, salamina da sugo, and traditional first courses. Accompanying the festival are musical evenings in the square, craft markets, and exhibitions, with the usual fireworks display to close, scheduled for September 6, 2026.
