The Abruzzo Carnival in Francavilla al Mare

The Abruzzo Carnival is the most important and long-standing carnival event on the Abruzzo coast, transforming Francavilla al Mare, in the province of Chieti, into a massive open-air stage every winter. Impressive papier-mâché floats, masked groups, marching bands, and dance troupes parade through the town center and along the coastline, delighting an audience that travels from across the Abruzzo region and beyond.

A tradition dating back to 1956

The history of the Francavilla Carnival dates back to 1956, when a group of citizens, together with the local town band, decided to liven up the winter by organizing a Carnival King parade. For the 25th edition in 1981, the event adopted its current name, the Abruzzo Carnival, establishing itself as a cornerstone of the regional calendar.

King Patanello, the iconic mask

The heart and soul of the festival is King Patanello, the traditional mask created in 1958 by a painter who was reportedly inspired by a local cobbler from the early 20th century, known for frequenting taverns and livening up the town with his pranks. To this day, the Carnival officially kicks off with the symbolic handing over of the city keys to Patanello in Piazza Sirena.

Parades, floats, and shows

The program spans three days: the Sundays of Carnival and Shrove Tuesday. The allegorical float parades depart in the afternoon from the train station square and wind through Viale Nettuno, Piazza Sirena, Lungomare Kennedy, and Largo Modesto della Porta. The floats are accompanied by the Patanello Street Band, masked groups, dance schools, and street performers, while the main stage in Piazza Sirena hosts entertainment and shows. The event concludes with an awards ceremony for the best float and a spectacular fireworks display.
