Summer evening concerts by the Chienes band at the village pavilion
The Abendkonzerte of the Musikkapelle Kiens are a staple of summer in Chienes (known as Kiens in German), a town of about 3,000 residents in the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano, within the Trentino-Alto Adige region. On summer evenings, the local band takes to the bandstand (Musikpavillon) to offer free open-air performances for the community and tourists alike.
The Musikkapelle Kiens was founded in 1820 and currently features about 57 active musicians, including traditional flag bearers and Marketenderinnen. Like all bands in South Tyrol, it plays an integral role in village life throughout the year, performing at processions, religious festivals, civil commemorations, and these summer concerts. The band has endured through world wars and historical challenges, surviving thanks to the musicians' dedication to playing together and the Kameradschaft—the spirit of camaraderie typical of Tyrolean band associations.
Dressed in traditional costumes (Tracht), the musicians perform a classic repertoire of South Tyrolean Blasmusik: marches, polkas, waltzes, folk tunes, and concert pieces. On select evenings, the Musikkapelle Kiens performs alongside other groups, such as the local youth band (Jugendkapelle Terento/Chienes) or visiting guest bands. The atmosphere is informal and convivial, with the audience gathered around the pavilion.
Chienes is located in the lower Puster Valley, at the foot of the Kronplatz ski area, near the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park. The municipality includes the hamlets of Casteldarne (Ehrenburg), San Sigismondo (St. Sigmund), Corti (Hofern), and Monghezzo (Getzenberg). It is home to treasures such as the 12th-century Ehrenburg Castle and the parish church of San Sigismondo, a fine example of Puster Valley Gothic architecture. These evening concerts offer a simple, authentic way to experience the hospitality and traditions of this mountain corner.
The 2026 summer program of the Musikkapelle Kiens includes two evening concerts (Abendkonzerte) at the bandstand in Chienes/Kiens, in the Puster Valley. The first is scheduled for Thursday, July 30, 2026 ('Abendkonzert in Kiens'); the second for Friday, August 7, 2026, with the participation of guests from Weiterstadt ('Abendkonzert mit Weiterstädter in Kiens'). The concerts are free and generally start at 8:00 PM. They are cancelled in case of bad weather. Dates are based on the band's official annual program.
Chienes/Kiens is located in the Puster Valley, in the province of Bolzano. By car, it is accessible via the Puster Valley state road (SS49); by train, the Puster Valley line (Fortezza–San Candido) stops in Chienes. The nearest airports are Bolzano, Innsbruck, and Verona.
Admission to the evening concerts is free. The Abendkonzerte generally take place at 8:00 PM at the village bandstand. Concerts are cancelled in case of bad weather.
