History, culture, and roots tourism in the ancient Sicel-Greek city
The Abakainon Festival is a cultural and identity-focused event held in Tripi, a small town in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, Sicily. This secular event is dedicated to rediscovering the roots of the ancient Sicel-Greek city of Abakainon, one of the most important centers of ancient Sicily, whose ruins still survive within the territory of Tripi. The festival was born from the concept of 'roots tourism'—a journey to rediscover the places and memories of one's origins.
The event is closely linked to Regional Law no. 25 of June 10, 2025, through which the Sicilian Region officially recognized the dual name Tripi-Abakainon, cementing the unbreakable bond between the contemporary municipality and its ancient Greek heritage. The Abakainon Festival has thus become an annual occasion to celebrate this recognition and restore a sense of heritage to the local community.
The day features numerous events spread across the hamlets and the historic center of Tripi. Exhibition venues—the Santi Furnari Archaeological Museum, the Agora-Forum in the Piano district, and the evocative Monumental Necropolis—open their doors to visitors, while the AbaTour guides the public on an itinerary discovering the area's historical and artistic wonders.
The concluding moment is the Abakainon Concert, which brings the sounds of ancient and modern Greece to life, sealing a day that blends archaeology, gastronomy, art, and live performance. Today, the Abakainon Festival stands as one of the most important secular events for the Nebrodi community and a model for enhancing the cultural heritage of small villages in inland Sicily.
The 2nd edition of the Abakainon Festival, on Saturday, June 13, 2026, brought Tripi to life with a program full of events, organized by the Municipality together with the Archeoclub Città di Tripi-Abakainon and the research group for the enhancement of Abakainon, with Mayor Michele Lemmo.
The final concert featured maestro Carmelo Siciliano and Greek musician Evaggelos Merkouris, with a repertoire dedicated to the sounds of ancient and modern Greece.
Tripi is located in the Nebrodi mountains, in the hinterland of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Falcone-Tripi exit and continuing inland. The nearest train station is Falcone, on the Tyrrhenian line.
