About Bafia Traveling Nativity

Every year during the Christmas season, the small hamlet of Bafia in Castroreale (Messina province) transforms into a charming, life-sized nativity scene. The 'Pasturato Itinerante' is a living nativity that brings the narrow streets of the historic center to life with costumed performers: barbers, embroiderers, fishmongers, carpenters, and pastry chefs recreate ancient trades amidst burning fires, torches, and tastings of traditional foods. The path culminates at the Nativity grotto, and on Epiphany, it takes on a traveling character as shepherds recite ancient verses in a rhythmic chant.

A living nativity in the heart of Sicily

The Bafia Traveling Nativity Scene is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events in the province of Messina. It takes place in the small hamlet of Bafia, within the territory of Castroreale—one of Italy's most beautiful villages, nestled in the Peloritani mountains of Sicily. For a few days, the historic center turns into an authentic living nativity, recreating the atmosphere of Bethlehem at the time of the Baby Jesus.

Ancient scenes and trades

Along the village's characteristic narrow streets, visitors encounter dozens of costumed performers bringing traditional peasant and artisan scenes to life. Highlights include:

  • the barber's shop and the cobbler's workshop;
  • the baker, the fishmonger, and the pastry chef;
  • embroiderers busy at their craft;
  • carpenters and shepherds with their flocks.

Small fires are lit along the route, adding warmth and atmosphere, while torches and music guide visitors to the climax: the arrival at the Nativity grotto, featuring Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, and the Angels.

The Epiphany tradition

The most anticipated moment is Epiphany, when the 'Pasturato' takes on its truly traveling character: each shepherd heads toward the grotto to present their gifts and, upon reaching the Nativity scene, recites rhymed verses in a rhythmic chant. This cultural heritage, passed down through generations, is a fundamental element of Bafia's historical identity. The event concludes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men at the grotto, a moment of great solemnity and wonder.

A community event

The Traveling Nativity is the result of the commitment of the Forum Agenda 18 and Pro Bafia Attiva associations, which work closely with the local community and the Parish, supported by the municipal administration of Castroreale. After a long hiatus, the event has been revived and now attracts numerous visitors from all over Sicily, eager to rediscover folk traditions and the authenticity of a Christmas from times past.

Bafia Traveling Nativity — edition 2026

The dates for the 2026 edition of the Bafia Traveling Nativity Scene have not yet been officially announced. The event traditionally takes place during the Christmas season, between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany (January 6th), in the narrow streets of the historic center of Bafia, a hamlet of Castroreale. It is recommended to check the official channels of the organizing associations for the updated calendar.

The 2026 edition of the Bafia Traveling Nativity Scene does not yet have an official program. Following the custom of previous years, the living nativity should animate the historic center of the Castroreale hamlet during the period between Christmas and Epiphany, featuring traditional ancient trades, the Nativity grotto, and the arrival of the Three Wise Men. Dates and times will be communicated by the Forum Agenda 18 and Pro Bafia Attiva associations.
