The traveling living nativity scene that turns Bafia into a village-sized crib

The Bafia Traveling Nativity Scene is one of the most heartfelt Christmas events in the province of Messina. It takes place in the small hamlet of Bafia, within the territory of Castroreale—one of Italy's most beautiful villages, nestled in the Peloritani mountains of Sicily. For a few days, the historic center turns into an authentic living nativity, recreating the atmosphere of Bethlehem at the time of the Baby Jesus.
Along the village's characteristic narrow streets, visitors encounter dozens of costumed performers bringing traditional peasant and artisan scenes to life. Highlights include:
Small fires are lit along the route, adding warmth and atmosphere, while torches and music guide visitors to the climax: the arrival at the Nativity grotto, featuring Mary, Joseph, the Baby Jesus, and the Angels.
The most anticipated moment is Epiphany, when the 'Pasturato' takes on its truly traveling character: each shepherd heads toward the grotto to present their gifts and, upon reaching the Nativity scene, recites rhymed verses in a rhythmic chant. This cultural heritage, passed down through generations, is a fundamental element of Bafia's historical identity. The event concludes with the arrival of the Three Wise Men at the grotto, a moment of great solemnity and wonder.
The Traveling Nativity is the result of the commitment of the Forum Agenda 18 and Pro Bafia Attiva associations, which work closely with the local community and the Parish, supported by the municipal administration of Castroreale. After a long hiatus, the event has been revived and now attracts numerous visitors from all over Sicily, eager to rediscover folk traditions and the authenticity of a Christmas from times past.
The 2026 edition of the Bafia Traveling Nativity Scene does not yet have an official program. Following the custom of previous years, the living nativity should animate the historic center of the Castroreale hamlet during the period between Christmas and Epiphany, featuring traditional ancient trades, the Nativity grotto, and the arrival of the Three Wise Men. Dates and times will be communicated by the Forum Agenda 18 and Pro Bafia Attiva associations.
Bafia is a hamlet of the Municipality of Castroreale, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto), continuing inland toward Castroreale and the hamlet of Bafia. The nearest train station is Barcellona-Castroreale.
The event takes place in the late afternoon and evening, roughly from 5:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Admission to the living nativity is generally free.
Warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended for navigating the sloping streets of the historic center. It is best to park at the entrance of the village.
